๐Ÿšจ SLEEPING WHILE ON DUTY: A SECURITY RISK WE SHOULD NOT NORMALIZE

A security officer is employed to remain alert, observe, prevent, detect and respond when necessary.

So when a security officer sleeps while on duty, even for a few minutes, the problem is bigger than simply โ€œclosing your eyes.โ€

During those few minutes, something can happen without being noticed.

๐Ÿ”น A person can gain unauthorized access.
๐Ÿ”น An intruder can enter or leave unnoticed.
๐Ÿ”น A fire or emergency may go undetected.
๐Ÿ”น Property or equipment can be tampered with.
๐Ÿ”น A visitor or employee may need assistance and receive none.
๐Ÿ”น Important security information can be missed.

Night duty can be tiring, and security officers are human beings who need adequate rest. But being tired does not remove the responsibility to remain alert while on duty.

If you are struggling to stay awake, don't simply surrender to sleep.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Take permitted steps to regain alertness.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Stay active and move around your assigned area when appropriate.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Follow your company's procedures for breaks and fatigue.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Inform your supervisor if fatigue is affecting your ability to perform safely.

Remember: You are not at your post just to occupy a chair.

You are there because someone, something, or somewhere is depending on your alertness.

๐Ÿ’™ BE ALERT. BE PROFESSIONAL. BE TRUSTED.
