Zambians, this truck is carrying copper valued at almost $300 000 - $400 000 with copper currently selling at over $13 000 per ton on the London Stock Exchange. That means 500 - 1000 of these trucks which move our Zambian Roads in that Kaoma - Solwezi Road can rebuild that road in one year. The Kaoma road has been damaged for almost 2 decades now because our country has had no money to rebuild it in the past 20 years. The mine and truck owners have simply shifted route and now coming to Ndola, then Lusaka until Mongu - onto Katima and Walvis Bay.
To them it doesn't matter if our Zambian roads are damaged. They just shift routes. They carry copper worth millions in USDs on the roads everyday but we can't use those funds to rebuild our Zambian roads because whilst the Copper is being mined from our Zambian soils, it doesn't belong to us - it belongs to Canadian, Australian and Chinese Mine owners. As a result, if we want to rebuilt these roads, we will need to go to the Chinese to ask for loans to rebuild the same Zambian roads on which copper worth billions is being transported out of our country everyday.
That is the situation our country has been in since 1991. For us to build a 100 Kilometres road, we need to go and ask for loans from some of the same people who mine and makes their riches off the minerals beneath our Zambian soils. Then for saying it, my fellow Zambians are turned against me and they fight me for opening their eyes. I repeat the usual; we must seek more share holding in our mines. If we continue being at the mercy of tax, royalties and Corporate Social Responsibility like we have for the past 30 years, we will never be able to build this country because the tax, royalties and CSR we get are like hand to mouth, paid today and finishes tomorrow. We cannot continue to be a nation that for 30 years sells its key mines and then sits back, expecting someone else to come and rebuild our land.
