A 10 year old dies while six others survive with serious injuries in a road traffic

Police statement

December 19, 2021 - A 10 year old juvenile sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot while six others survived with serious injuries in a road traffic accident involving a Lusaka bound bus along the Great East Road.

The deceased juvenile has only been identified as Worth Lungu while the injured victims including the driver of the bus were identified as Veronica Phiri aged 33 of Kasisi in Lusaka, Mary Phiri aged 28 of Lilanda Compound in Lusaka, Enesiya Phiri aged 73 of Chisamba, Loveness Phiri aged 58 of Petauke and Morris Zulu aged 23 of Lusaka’s Kabanana area.

The accident occurred on December 18, 2021 at around 13:00 hours when the motor vehicle, a yongtong bus, registration number BAL 9510 property of Jehovah Blessings which was been driven by Mwamba Simwanza aged 43 of Chipata Overspill in Lusaka failed to ascend the hill at Chipako area in Rufunsa District forcing the bus to reverse and eventually overturned into a ditch on the right side of the road with 43 passengers on board.

The body of the deceased was deposited in Mphanshya hospital mortuary while the injured victims are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

The bus had its windscreen shattered and suffered damage on its right side.
