Part 1: Know Thy Phone's Camera

Photography, like any other art, is the result of an artist using a specific set of tools to achieve a certain effect. The skills of the artist matter more than anything. And one of the crucial skills of any artist is knowing what his or her tools can and cannot do.

When you pick up a new phone and open the camera app, you cannot really tell the quality of photos it will go you, especially in different conditions. Some phones perform really well in well-lit environments and terribly in low-light environments. Some phones give you more natural images and little precessions and others dial things up a whole lot! You have to know the capabilities of the tool you’re using. Learn the basic settings. Try out the filters. You can even look for YouTube videos of how to get the most out of a specific phone’s camera.

Try using the phone you plan to take picture with in different locations and light environments. Start learning what works best for it. The knowledge of your tools will allow you to use them in the best way possible. And make others wonder how you did what you did with the same tool that they have, yet they cannot produce results as well as yours.

For inspiration of what is possible, google search ‘Amazing photos taken by *insert your phone model*’ and download the best 10 images. Then try to analyze them and recreate them as best you can.
