Chapter 1

In 2020, I found myself in a small barber shop, waiting as my cousin got his hair cut. Across the room, a young man's eyes kept wandering in my direction. It made me uncomfortable, and I quickly formed a disliking towards him. Even when I met him later, I couldn't shake off the feeling, silently criticizing him in my thoughts.

Little did I know, during those moments, he was developing feelings for me. It wasn't until 2022 that he mustered the courage to approach me, albeit indirectly through my cousin. He confessed his admiration and desire for us to be together. My immediate response was to suggest we remain friends. Secretly, I used the excuse of my friend's long-time crush on him to justify my rejection.

However, as time passed, I learned more about him from mutual acquaintances like my cousin and friend. They praised his intelligence and character, particularly highlighting his academic achievements at Mukuba School. Feeling the pressure of my own academic challenges, I reluctantly agreed to let him tutor me. It was a selfish decision, using him for his academic prowess.

When he offered to help me at my place, bringing a thoughtful gift of shawarma and an apple drink, I felt embarrassed and overwhelmed by his gestures. I couldn't reciprocate his feelings, nor did I appreciate his public declaration of our supposed relationship to his friends. In a rush of shame and confusion, I ended things abruptly via text, ignoring his pleas for a face-to-face conversation.

Weeks passed, during which he respected my decision and kept his distance. It wasn't until someone confronted me, accusing me of mistreating him, that I began to question my actions. Reflecting on their words, I realized perhaps I had been too harsh and insensitive. Despite my initial doubts and reservations, I texted him, tentatively suggesting we give it another chance.
