When buying a car—or even inspecting your own—pull out the dipstick while the engine is running.

If you notice oil being pushed out through the dipstick tube, it’s often a sign of worn piston compression rings. When the rings are worn, combustion pressure leaks past the pistons into the crankcase. This excess pressure has nowhere to go, so it escapes through the dipstick tube.

Such an engine will usually feel underpowered and may have a hard start.
Only consider buying a car in this condition if you are mentally and financially prepared for an engine rebuild or a full replacement, depending on the level of damage.

Today we talk about CVT which is commonly used in Toyota Corolla Axio. The gearbox is generally solid — but it still needs proper care. Here’s how you can specifically take care of your Axio's CVT:

1. Use Genuine Toyota CVT Fluid

Use only Toyota CVT-FE (for newer models) or Toyota CVT TC (for older ones—check your manual or the transmission type).

Never mix with universal CVT fluids. Always stick to OEM.

2. Regular Fluid Change

Toyota usually recommends fluid change every 60,000 to 80,000 km, but it's safer to do it at 50,000 km, especially if you drive in hot, dusty, or hilly areas.

3. Smooth Driving

Avoid flooring the accelerator from a stop.

Keep driving smooth and steady—CVTs like gentle inputs.

4. Avoid Overloading

Axio isn’t designed for heavy loads. Don’t overload with passengers or cargo—this strains the transmission.

5. Parking & Hills

On hills, use the handbrake before shifting to Park (P) to reduce stress on the transmission.

Always pause at full stop before switching between Drive (D) and Reverse (R).

6. Don’t Skip Warm-Up in Cold Weather

Let the car idle for 1-2 minutes during cold starts before moving off.

7. Look Out for Symptoms

Whining noise, delayed response, or jerky acceleration means get it checked ASAP.

Early diagnosis can save you from a full gearbox replacement.

2. Use the Correct Transmission Fluid:

3. Avoid Overheating:

Transmission heat is a major cause of failure.

Avoid aggressive driving or towing heavy loads without proper cooling.

Consider installing an auxiliary transmission cooler if you tow often.

4. Shift Properly:

Come to a complete stop before shifting between reverse and drive.

Avoid coasting in neutral or resting your foot on the brake constantly.

5. Service Regularly:

Have the transmission inspected during regular maintenance.

Address leaks, odd noises, or slipping promptly.

6. Install Software Updates:

For modern vehicles, transmission behavior is often controlled by software that may get updates from the manufacturer.

7. Avoid Overloading the Vehicle:

Too much weight can strain the transmission.
