From Phoenix to academic distinction, Mohammed Rizwan Ismail’s journey is a powerful testament to faith, resilience, and the unwavering support of family.
As the first member of his family to attend university, Mohammed transformed challenges into opportunities, balancing his studies, Qur’an memorisation, MMA training, and personal growth while overcoming anxiety and excelling academically.
His dedication earned him the prestigious distinction of graduating Cum Laude and securing a place on the Dean’s Merit List with an impressive final average of 82.59%.
Now pursuing his Bachelor of Applied Science Honours in Biotechnology at DUT, Mohammed is contributing to cutting-edge research aimed at combating antibiotic resistance and advancing global health.

🌟 Student Spotlight: Anele Mtshali
Four awards. One powerful journey.
Ms Anele Mtshali was among the standout achievers at the Higher Certificate in Applied Sciences Awards Ceremony, where she received four awards for academic excellence.
She achieved a 77% average, seven distinctions, and top marks in Communication for Science, Physics A, and Chemistry A.
“I feel truly amazing. All those sleepless nights did not go in vain. I am overjoyed and grateful that my hard work has paid off.”
Anele is now pursuing a Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, continuing her journey toward her academic and career goals.

The Department of Mathematics at DUT recently hosted the Higher Certificate in Applied Sciences (HCIAS) 2025 Awards Ceremony, honoring the incredible achievements of our outstanding students!
From a cohort boasting 16 Cum Laude achievers to phenomenal individual milestones, our students have proven that hard work, discipline, and resilience truly pay off.
🏆 A massive congratulations to our top achievers:
Mr. Evan Cole Goveia – Overall Top Achiever (86% average, 9 distinctions, and a perfect 100% in Mathematics B!)
Mr. Thalente Gumede – Second-best achiever (82% average, 9 distinctions)

Meet Zinhle Makhathini, a Faculty of Applied Sciences Old Girl and Marine Pilot at the Transnet National Ports Authority, with over 18 years of experience in the maritime industry.
She studied Maritime Studies at DUT, and today she guides some of the world’s largest vessels through one of Africa’s busiest ports, ensuring safe and precise navigation every day.
She is a true example of how the journey continues after graduation, a living compass for what it means to lead with purpose, direction, and confidence in the maritime world. 🌍
