What is an open bite and what can be done to help?

What is an open bite?

🟡An open bite is a form of malocclusion of the jaw which may be observed in young children.
🟡The top and bottom front teeth slant outward and don’t touch when the jaw is closed.
🟡Common causes of an open bite are:
- Prolonged use of a dummy
- A tongue thrust
- Thumb-sucking
- TMJ disorders
- Genetic skeletal growth abnormalities
🟡An open bite can have the following effects:
- speech difficulties, commonly a lisp
- Difficulties with biting and chewing foods
- Increased wear of the back teeth, causing discomfort and possibly tooth fractures
🟡An open bite is usually treated using orthodontics (braces and surgery) and speech therapy to facilitate tongue retraction and facilitate clearer production of the /s/ and /t/ sounds.

A lovely review from a mommy of one of our special patients: When my little boy was 10 months old he still wasn’t showing any signs of crawling.
He is my second child so I knew that he wasn’t displaying the usual precursors to crawling, and I decided to take him to Nicky Lasch for an NDT assessment.
Nicky immediately noticed that he was hyperflexible and that this was making it much more difficult for him to start moving.
Five sessions later I am so happy to say that he is crawling like an absolute champion!
Nicky did her magic with her patient, caring, and kind approach.
I am so grateful to her for her help and would highly recommend her practice!
