BREAKING: Driving licence validity extended to 10 years for light motor vehicles

Cabinet has approved an extension of the validity period for driving licences for codes A, A1, B and EB from 5 years to 10 years.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
1. Who it applies to: Motorcycles and light motor vehicles - codes A, A1, B, EB
2. New validity: 10 years instead of 5 years
3. What stays the same:
- Heavy commercial and public transport vehicles will still follow the 2 or 5 year renewal cycles
- Professional driving permits remain on a 2 year renewal cycle

The 10 year renewal period applies only to light motor vehicles.

Pretoria man in court over alleged intentional HIV infection

A 47-year-old Pretoria man is behind bars after appearing in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on allegations that he intentionally infected his 38-year-old girlfriend with HIV.

According to court proceedings, the accused made a brief appearance this week where the matter was postponed to 3 August 2026 to allow for the collection of further bail information.

The case has sparked public debate around disclosure, consent, and accountability in intimate relationships. The National Prosecuting Authority has not yet confirmed the exact charges the man will face, but legal experts say cases of alleged intentional transmission can be prosecuted under common law, including assault or attempted murder, depending on the evidence.

The accused remains in custody pending the next court date.
