Lieutenant Colonel Fana Simon β€œSy” Maseko, a senior SAPS officer based in Witbank, Mpumalanga, was shot and killed outside his home.

According to reports, Maseko was driving his Mercedes-Benz into his driveway in Ackerville when at least two gunmen opened fire on him. He was struck multiple times and died at the scene.

Investigators reportedly believed the attack may have been a targeted assassination rather than a robbery because the attackers did not steal his vehicle, cellphone, wallet, or any other belongings. At the time of his death, Maseko was involved in overseeing major criminal investigations in an area known for organised crime, coal-smuggling operations, and violent robberies.

As a result, authorities considered the possibility that he was killed because of his work on sensitive and high-profile cases.
