Crinum crassicaule despite the exquisite flowers, has proven to be the most tricky indigenous (South African) crinum to keep going. Ideally suited to container planting and yet no matter how well drained our soil is (and attempts to mimic its natural habitat), how frugal the watering, they rot easily. They are no doubt best suited to rockeries and veld gardens together with Boophones, Albuca nelsonii, Nerine krigei, Merwilla (Scilla) natalensis, Galtonia & Ornithogalum. Some bulbs just do better in a more natural environment. Don't throw out larger bulbs that have rotted because hidden beneath all those black, stinky, rotten scales, you might just find large beautiful bulblets. Here we have 4 strong, healthy bulblets attached to the basal plate (which will eventually fall away). Do not remove them/divide them from the basal plate because then they will also rot. They first need to develop roots.
