We see a South Africa where everyone belongs and thrives We strive to ignite change, nurture individuals and heal communities.

Founded in 1992, our organisation is community based, context wise (or wise enough), holistic in approach and sacrificial in service. To empower people to move from dependency to dignity. Poverty and inequality in South Africa is systemic and multigenerational. PEN’s projects work together to deliver an ecosystem of care to vulnerable families to enable them to break free of injustice and poverty,

Winter Hope: The Power of Warmth ❄️🧡
It’s cold. Really cold.

When the temperature drops, our natural instinct is to retreat inside, turn up the heat, and huddle up with our families. But for hundreds of vulnerable children, families, and individuals on the streets and in our communities, there is no escape from the bitter winter air.

Now is the time to huddle up as a collective... and show those who need it most the fierce power and warmth of a community that cares.

We can’t change the weather, but together, we can change how someone survives it. We urgently need your help to stock our Winter Hope drive with the basics of survival and dignity:

🧣 Warm clothing (jackets, beanies, scarves, and socks)

🛏️ Blankets (heavy-duty or fleece)

🧦 New underwear (critical for basic hygiene and dignity)

🍲 Non-perishable food (to provide hot, nourishing meals)

Don't let anyone brave the freeze alone this season. Bring your warmth, drop off your donations, and let's wrap our city in hope. DM us for more details.

Knowing that the school system fails South African children, leaving 81% of our 10-year-olds unable to read for meaning, we make sure that pre-literacy starts early at the daycares we partner with.
Pre-literacy? Tell us what you think that means.

She isn't just playing a beat, she is finding her own rhythm.

Today, South Africa celebrates Youth Day. We look back with immense respect at the courage of the generation of 1976, who rose up to demand a different future. 🇿🇦

In 2026, the challenges are new, but the grit, the talent, and the irrepressible spirit of South African youth remain unchanged.

At PEN, we do not try to give our young people a new rhythm. They already have it. Our mission is to walk with them: to clear the path, bridge the gaps, and provide the steady support they need so they can play their unique beat as loud and as clearly as they deserve.

To the drummers, the dreamers, the scientists, and the future-shapers: We see you. We hear you. And we are so proud to be your Merchants of Hope.

Happy Youth Day!

Behind every resilient, successful young adult is an Early Childhood Development (ECD) teacher who chose to step up.

Tomorrow, South Africa celebrates Youth Day. While we look back at history, we also look forward to the future—and that future starts in the very first years of a child's life.

Many of the daycare teachers in our inner cities and rural communities start with nothing more than a passion for children. They don’t have formal resources or training. That’s why our ECD team walks beside them.

Through monthly intensive training workshops, weekly collaborative planning sessions, and daily dedication on the ground, these teachers are becoming the professional educators our children deserve.

Continuous learning isn't just a strategy; it’s how we multiply hope. Thank you to every teacher who spent their time preparing to lead the next generation this week!

Ons kan betrokke raak by sake soos:
* hulpverlening ten opsigte van rampe
* armoedeverligting: werkskepping, behuising, etiese besigheid

Sluit aan by reeds-bestaande instansies soos:
* Winterhoop
* Respond SA
* Hulp aan boere

A newspaper is not a blanket. And the person beneath it is a real human being.

As the winter temperatures drop across the country, it can be easy to pull our own coats tighter and walk past the people sleeping on our pavements. But the reality is stark: newsprint doesn't keep out the freezing cold, and it doesn't protect a person's dignity.

At PEN, we believe that true community means seeing the humanity in everyone. The vulnerable and homeless individuals in our city aren't just statistics—they are fathers, sons, and people full of potential who have hit incredibly hard times.

This season, we are inviting local businesses, churches, and individuals to join our Winterhope Drive. Together, we can provide the physical warmth and care needed to help people survive the winter and find a path off the streets.

🙌 We urgently need your help to stock our winter stores:
We are actively collecting warm blankets, sleeping bags, winter clothing, and new socks and underwear for the men staying in our shelter. Every single donation translates directly into comfort and safety for someone who needs it most.

👉 How to donate or drop off supplies:
Leave a comment below, send us a direct message, or email us at [email protected] and we will send you our drop-off details and current priority needs list.

🎒 A great future starts in a prepared classroom.

At PEN Young Children, our vision is simple: We see a South Africa where every child is able to thrive through access to quality Early Childhood Development (ECD).

But that vision doesn't just happen. It takes intentional, behind-the-scenes work. What you see here is our team doing weekly lesson planning with preschool teachers. When a teacher is fully prepared, confident, and equipped for the week ahead, their classroom becomes a launchpad for school readiness.

We currently partner with more than 240 daycares at 9 ECD Support centres, walking alongside them to elevate early education in our communities.

✨ How you can partner with us this Mandela Day:
You can help us fuel this vision! We are looking for groups to:

🧸 Sort donated toys to refresh our PENdula incentive stores.

🧶 Knit, sew, or donate "Balls for Babies" to support physical development in our partner daycares.

🎨 Get your hands dirty upgrading structures at our inner-city EduPEN preschool.

📲 Want the full list of ideas? Drop a comment below or send us a DM, and we will send you our quick A4 Mandela Day guide!

📚 Show up. Study. Repeat.
You think writing exams is hard? Try studying in an inner-city flat shared with five families, while three churches and two nightclubs compete with the sound below.
That is the reality for many of the teens at the PEN Study Camp 2026. But as long as they keep showing up for their future, so will we. We provide a safe, quiet environment, focused tutoring, and the nutrition they need to succeed during exams.
Want to help them crush their goals? Your company, church, or community group can partner with us this Mandela Day by putting together Exam Survival Packs (stationery and healthy snacks) to stock our PENdula store.

📲 Drop a comment below or DM us, and we’ll send you our Mandela Day partnership one-pager with all the details!
