IMATU WINS AGAIN

Labour Court Dismisses City of Cape Town's Application for Leave to Appeal -
Member's Reinstatement Victory Upheld

IMATU is pleased to report a further victory for our member in the matter of IMATU obo Sauls v City of Cape Town and Others.

Following the Labour Court's January 2026 judgment, which found the member's dismissal substantively unfair and ordered his reinstatement, the City of Cape Town applied for leave to appeal the decision.

On 9 June 2026, the Labour Court dismissed the City's application for leave to appeal, finding that there were no reasonable prospects that another court would reach a different conclusion.

This outcome confirms the strength of the original judgment and reinforces important labour law principles, including that employers must prove a genuine link between off-duty misconduct and the employment relationship, and that dismissal cannot be justified on speculation or assumptions.

This matter reflects IMATU's continued commitment to protecting members' rights, ensuring fair disciplinary processes, and pursuing justice through every stage of litigation.

Happy Youth Day!

IMATU will join fellow South Africans in commemorating Youth Day on 16 June 2026.

Following the advent of democracy in 1994, the new democratic government declared 16 June as National Youth Day, and the month of June, as Youth Month.

Youth Day highlights the crucial role young people play in addressing global issues, particularly in creating sustainable solutions for our planet.

On this Youth Day, we remember the sacrifices, bravery and dedication of the past and together it is our collective responsibility to educate and support the leaders of tomorrow.

Eastern Cape Region Appreciates Metropolitan’s Generous Support

IMATU proudly acknowledges and celebrates the Eastern Cape Region’s valued partnership with Metropolitan, whose generous sponsorship of branded pull-up banners and tablecloths continues to strengthen organisational visibility across the Region.

The Eastern Cape Region extends its sincere appreciation to Metropolitan for this meaningful contribution, through which each Branch in the Region will received two branded pull-up banners and two tablecloths. These resources will support Branches in monthly constituency meetings, general meetings, community engagements, and other important organisational activities.

Such contributions not only enhance the professional image and visibility of IMATU structures within communities but also strengthen the Region’s ability to effectively represent the interests, values, and objectives of our members.

IMATU Eastern Cape remains truly grateful for Metropolitan’s ongoing commitment and partnership and looks forward to continued collaboration as we work together to make a meaningful impact in the lives of employees and the communities we serve.

Thank you, Metropolitan, for your valued contribution and support.
