Handmade Laundry Bar using Beef Tallow (fat)..

Beef is one of the most economical fats used for bar soap Making. It makes a wonderful laundry bar that is simple to make and very cost effective.. You can buy beef fat from your local butchery and clean or render it by using the simple steps below... Check out the comment section for each step.

Rendering(cleaning) your beef tallow is a slow but necessary process but will be worth the time.. 1kg of chopped beef fat takes about 2hours to render. The fat should contain as little meaty bits as possible. If you can, cut those off before rendering.

Warning, Tallow does maintain some of its fatty smell even after rendering. To reduce this smell, add a hand full of fresh Lemongrass, rosemary or lavender to your pot while rendering. This will reduce the smell.

Recipe (Formulation) for Tallow Soap

375g Melted, Rendered Beef Tallow
100g Coconut Oil
25g Castor Oil
165ml Water
75g Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide)
10ml Fragrance/Essential Oil of choice

Soapmaking Safety Precautions

- Caustic Soda (lye) is a dangerous chemical. Always wear gloves, Safety goggles and a long-sleeved cotton shirt or overall when making bar soap.

- Store your Caustic Soda in a well sealed container in a safe, storage cupboard.

- Disinfect all your tools and work surfaces before making soap. Keep your workspace sanitary at all times.
