🚨 FREIGHT OPERATORS — CRITICAL WEEK AHEAD

Two things hit simultaneously this week and they're compressing margins from both sides.

1. Diesel up R6.19/litre effective 6 May.
That's not a rounding error. A Johannesburg–Durban run just got R2,400 more expensive per load. Cape Town? Add R5,800. If your rate schedule hasn't moved, you're absorbing that personally.

2. The N3 is CRITICAL right now.
GPS jamming is active on the Johannesburg–Durban corridor. Blue-light impersonation is the preferred tactic. If your truck is running a single-device tracker, your insurer may not pay if something goes wrong — because jammers are now reliable enough to neutralise them entirely.

349 truck hijackings were recorded nationally in Q4 2025. 64% of those were in Gauteng. The threat hasn't gone away — it's just competing with the diesel crisis for your attention.

We publish corridor intelligence every week. If you want to know what's happening on your routes before your next dispatch, follow this page or send us a message.

Diesel Shock + Cargo Crime = Dual Threat Week
As of 6 May 2026, road freight operators are absorbing two simultaneous shocks.

Diesel increased by R6.19/litre the largest single adjustment in recent years. At that rate, a Johannesburg–Durban return trip now costs R3,600–R4,800 more in fuel alone.

At the same time, cargo crime continues at an estimated 30–35 incidents per week nationally. The N3 remains Critical. GPS jammers are active. Blue-light impersonation is confirmed across three major corridors.

These pressures don't operate in isolation. When margins tighten, operators defer security investment. When security thins, syndicates move.

The operators who manage this week well are the ones who've separated their security cost from their margin pressure and treated both as non-negotiable.

If you run loads on the N3, N1, N12, or N4 and haven't reviewed your security posture this week now is the time.

Client Story: Breakdown on a Remote Road, Resolved in Hours

"We had a truck breakdown and I contacted Brandon. They immediately responded with a tactical team — the truck and driver were safe." Jureen Pottas, Pottas Transport

A breakdown on a remote road isn't just a mechanical problem. It's a security exposure. An immobilised truck, a driver alone, cargo sitting visible on the side of the road.

That's what our 24/7 tactical response exists for not just es**rt work, but the unplanned moments when your crew needs support and speed matters.

This is what we do. Every day. Across South Africa.

Freight Risk Awareness | Gauteng & KZN Freight Corridors

According to the latest published South African Police Service (SAPS) Annual Crime Statistics (2022/2023), truck hijackings remain a material risk exposure within key freight corridors.
Transport operators moving high-value cargo through Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal should prioritise:
• Pre-approved rest stops
• Structured route planning
• Real-time fleet monitoring oversight
• Driver stop-and-delay escalation protocols

Freight crime is structured and economically motivated.
Risk mitigation must be equally structured.
Freight Risk supports operators with corridor exposure analysis, coordinated response integration, and documented incident oversight.

Here is my question:

What is the purpose of having this if no proactive strategy is in place? All that this is, is another expense towards the truck owner/operator with no clear security strategy in place to curb diesel theft. Having all the (cameras, AI monitoring etc.) is nothing more than an expense and insurance liability šŸ«°šŸ¾.

The Problem with Relying Solely on Technology for Security

"We already have live tracking and AI surveillance. Isn’t that enough?"

This is one of the most common objections I hear from business owners when recommending proactive physical security measures.

While live tracking and in-cab AI cameras are fantastic tools, they’re not enough to prevent incidents. Here's why:

1ļøāƒ£ Technology Watches—It Doesn’t Act

Live tracking and AI cameras can provide evidence and alert you to incidents, but they don’t physically deter or stop threats like hijackings, theft, or roadside robberies.

2ļøāƒ£ Reactive Culture

Relying solely on technology creates a false sense of security. Business owners often wait for something to happen before realizing they needed armed es**rts, response teams, or risk assessments to prevent the incident in the first place.

3ļøāƒ£ Human Presence Matters

Criminals are far less likely to target a truck with visible physical security measures like armed es**rts or security convoys. A camera can’t stop an incident—trained professionals can.

4ļøāƒ£ Cost of "What If"

The cost of prevention is far lower than the financial and reputational damage caused by a single incident. Can your business afford downtime, damaged cargo, or strained client relationships?

Proactive Measures Save More Than They Cost

Technology should complement, not replace, physical security. Combining tools like live tracking with armed es**rts, route mapping, and on-ground response teams creates a holistic, preventative approach.

šŸš› Are you relying solely on technology for your fleet security? Let’s discuss the gaps and how to address them.

Are Unarmed Security Measures Enough in High-Risk Environments?

Recent events in Wellington, South Africa, have exposed the risks of relying solely on unarmed security in high-stakes settings like banks. An incident involving a dissatisfied customer armed with a panga ended in violence, highlighting a critical gap in how we approach safety.
Unarmed security and tools like cameras or access controls may deter or delay threats, but they cannot stop an active assailant. With police response times averaging 6–10 minutes, the danger persists far too long.
Professionally trained armed security offers a proactive solution, providing immediate response capabilities to protect lives and assets. Investing in proper security measures isn’t just about compliance; it’s about valuing safety over cost.
Are your current security measures enough to protect what matters most? Let’s rethink safety.
