Another one vehicle accident on the sonstraal road/ swafelsteert pad.

Paarl, 20th June 2026

Early morning and now in the early evening, again an accident on a pitch dark road, this time at a T junction with ditch.

The driver did not see the road end and drove straight through, cutting an orchard fence and damaging the power cables.

DFW Fire & Rescue NPC was quickly on scene and secured the area regarding a live cable sparking and guided the car passengers to safety. Paarl electrical services were alerted and responded, as well as towing services, while DFW EFAR Anthea Carlse bandaged the driver for minor injuries.

The power was cut of, so now the car can be removed and the power cable restored.

The DFW is active around the Sonstraal area as there are many accidents in the sonstraal area, especially as in the dark, the road signs are hardly visible and drivers drive to fast, a bad combination.

Luckily now, all passengers walked away.

The private Paarl based DFW Fire & Rescue NPC is involved in community training and upliftment.

General safety is everybodies concern, but do people know how to accomplish it.

Hence the DFW's effort to train local people with advanced skills, to make their work environment a place of success and secured safety.

With our training Partner for years, " Back to Basics " from Wellington, we again had staff members from various hospitality groups, (which are all DFW business and farm members), trained in Health and Safety on the workfloor" and " Fire awareness and Prevention", these are accredited training programs.

Knowledge is power, and with the relevant and correct training, work injuries are reduced and awareness and prevention can prevent disasters from occurring in the workplace.

We will show some pictures of successful trainees from the DFW main sponsor " De Leeuwenhof Estate Hotel ", for when you go there to eat or sleep or have your function, you know you are in safe and capable hands.

Last season alone, the DFW trained 40 CER ( Community Emergency Responders) issued through our partners, accredited fire fighting certificates, all were kitted with fire extinguishers and medical bags.

Well known Police officer caught by pitch dark notorius Sonstraal road curves.

Single Motorvehicle accident early this morning, leaves 1 person injured.

The DFW EFAR ( Emergency First Aid Responders) were alerted via the DFW emergency radio network by a patrolling Fidelity ADT officer Green, who came across the accident just when it happened.

On site, DFW officer Anthea Carlse stabilized the police officer and took care of his wellbeing, while Daan Van Leeuwen Boomkamp alerted EMS ambulance services and cordoned off the road.
Many police officers came to assist.

The collaboration was a huge success and the patient was loaded safely in the EMS Ambulance nr 129 and taken to hospital.

We thank all services for the great coordination and help.

The DFW Fire&Rescue is a private non profit and volunteer emergency service, assisting the Drakenstein community successful since 2017.

The Sonstraal Road is extremely dark at night and early hours of the morning, the road markings hardly visible, and the spot of the accident is notorious and already several people lost their lives just there, as recent as a month ago when a 26 year old young man lost control over his vehicle in the corner, and passed away on scene.

We urge Cape Winelands DM to visit this area and do something about the road situation and Drakenstein Municipality to fix the streetlights please, before more people become victims of this treacherous road.

Fire destroyed 3 structures at Lantana Street Paarl.

At 15.50 the DFW got a report of heavy smoke in Town.
A DFW responder nearby went to inspect and reported Shacks alight.
15.55 the DFW received the exact location and a picture of the drama unfolding.
16.00 truck and crew were ready and on their way.
16.01 report that paarl fire was on scene with first truck.
16.04 more Paarl fire trucks on site, DFW truck called back to Base.
No request for further assistance received.

We hope nobody got injured.

Just another day on a dirt road in the rural area...

Paarl, 6th June 2026

The emergency network of the private DFW Fire & Rescue NPC got allerted by a call regarding a single vehicle accident on Waterfall road in Dal Josafat.

The report was not specific regarding injuries,however the DFW dispatched a medical rescue team, which arrived first on scene.

Luckily the driver was not injured at all, and walked away with only a "bruised ego".

Gravel roads, require a steady hand and careful handling of speed, as one can quickly slide off into a ditch.

The car was severely damaged, towing services got arranged, ambulance cancelled and the DFW crew left the scene.

The DFW plays an important role with emergency response, especially in the remote rural areas.

We cannot start early enough talking to our young future generations about the dangers of fire.

The youngsters were quite engaging and were also told and shown what to do if they would get injured by fire.

The highlight if the morning, was the use of the fire lines of the big DFW Fire Truck and also putting some real bandages on.

The private DFW Fire & Rescue NPC based in Paarl, shows it's community involvement not only by active fire fighting but also by educational involvement and medical emergency response.

Clearly the youngsters now all want to become fire fighters.
