✨Read what fellow student Lisba writes when we asked her what impact learning flamenco at our studio and from Rae Dawn has had on her life, and what aspects of our classes or community have been the most meaningful to her…
Lisba: “I’ve always admired Rae-Dawn as an amazing dancer. With her powerful athleticism and beautiful lines, she manages to balance poise and passion. She sets high standards for herself, enhanced by Tanya Diamond’s choreography. With us aspiring mortals (dancers) she remains warm and approachable with a great sense of humour. She carries positivity and verve into her Flamenco teaching, as well as being an excellent and patient Pilates instructor. You will be pushed and prodded to new, unimaginable heigths of fitness and suppleness. Rae’s ‘yes-you-can’ attitude, rubs off on all her classes, and although the atmosphere is relaxed and jovial, her emphasis is firmly on precision as well as improving our form and style. She inspires us students to try harder and we are constantly challenged to raise the bar!
Learning new choreography in a group situation (and at a pace) has been really challenging, having only started dancing later in my life. The effort to persevere, both mentally and physically - in spite of aches and pains or brain fog, has been no easy feat ;) A good dose of ‘Obstinate Determination’, improving core strength (thanks to pilates@Rae) and regular practice does pay off, as well as help and kindness from fellow chicas! The camaraderie of being part of a Flamenco school and meeting a wider Flamenco community has been joyful and lifelong friendships and respect forged. No excuse is needed to celebrate with laughter, cake and champagne! I believe that if you dance and perform together, there will always be an unspoken connection and validation. I’ve also come to value my own form of expression - that fiery spirit of individuality which attracted me to Flamenco in the first place!”

Last year’s album collaboration went live this week at Die Boer, with lovely Bregtje Cals bashing it out in the company of Neil Sandilands and seasoned musicians Theo Crous, Schalk Joubert, Albert Frost, Ronan Skillen while beautiful Ana-Lisa Ventura kept an eye on all

Life is starting to feel like The Leftovers series ... most people can return to work, but not the dance community despite the fact that our students aren't forced to come, it would be their personal choice to attend if they felt it was a safe space ...
For the people who advocate to go online, please do not ask us to reduce the classical performing arts space to a small screen: have you ever been to a live performance in a theatre?
Have you ever experienced the impact between performer and audience that no video can ever capture?
Have you ever felt how the sound of a real instrument envelopes and penetrates your soul?
Do you know what applause and a standing ovation feels like?
We are prepared to wait, but abstain from using online as an overall solution going forward ...
From a Flamenco perspective, if I had to choreograph now it would definitely be Siguirilla
At least The Leftovers had a epic theme (and they could buy smokes in the series):

I would like to thank Coll Gomes for creating and sharing her personal journey of capturing the raw emotion of flamenco drawings through her website: http://collillustrator.withtank.com (see the gallery section)
I wondered at the time how and which opportunity will be adequate to use these drawings and somehow COVID-19, seems like the perfect time: people face isolation, sorrow, fear to moments of elation: and this is what flamenco is all about and possibly why people identify with it so much...
Thank you for your dedication ❤️
