Santa Shoebox Project
SSP collects and distributes personalised gifts of essential items and treats to children in need
The Santa Shoebox Project originated in Cape Town in 2006 with a humble 180 shoeboxes. In 17 years it has grown in leaps and bounds, with the number of Santa Shoeboxes donated reaching a total of 1 152 587. The shoeboxes are distributed to more than 1000 recipient facilities each year, through more than 60 satellites around South Africa and Namibia. The success of the Project can largely be attrib

For weeks, the walls and roof we built at Reaiteka had one job: to keep the world out. Now weโre adding the parts that let it back in. ๐
The doors will help keep 64 children safely inside their classrooms. The windows have a different job. They let in light for story time and fresh air for a room full of busy little bodies. A square of sky. A passing bird. A butterfly that can turn one small question into a whole lesson.๐๐
Because we're not building a place for children to hide from the world. We're building them a place to get ready for it.๐
Safe behind the door. Dreaming out of the window. That's what we built this week.
This is Build Eight for SSP Legacy, and our first with partners Breadline Africa, the Centre for Early Childhood Development, Kathu Solar Park and the Maruping community.

-Heyn AKA Dr Katryn Conradie on Binnelanders, grew up with Santa Shoebox. For her, the shoeboxes were the first sign the festive season had arrived.๐๐
๐ญShe still remembers the joy of choosing what to put in it for another child, and she says that feeling hasn't faded as an adult. If anything, it's grown.๐
Twenty years on, that's still what this project is about.
Packing a shoebox is one of the simplest and most impactful traditions you can create with your children.
They choose the child. They shop for the 8 specified items. They write the card. And somewhere in the middle of all that, they learn, without you having to say a word - that giving feels even better than getting.
โจStart your family's tradition this year. ๐ฃ Pledging opens 1st September, register your profile ๐ https://santashoebox.org.za/pledge-a-santa-shoebox/ and get ready for a Christmas to remember.

Ask a four-year-old to part with a toy and you will see it plainly: generosity is something children must be taught.
This Father's Day, we are thinking of the dads who volunteer their time, walk the aisles, check the list, choose the gifts and pack a Santa Shoebox with their children beside them. ๐
To the dad who lets his daughter choose the sweets, the dad who helps his son find the right toy, the dad who explains why the toothbrush matters, why the clothes must fit, why every item in that box counts, and then teaches his children to give it all away - we salute you. ๐ซก๐
Children may forget what was inside the box. But they will never forget the lesson.
To every dad volunteering, shopping, packing, giving and teaching that lesson - thank you.
Happy Father's Day ๐๐

๐ฃMarlene Agrella has been donating for over a decade. ๐Here's her beautiful story.
When my son was four or five, I saw an article in the local paper asking people to donate Santa Shoeboxes. I thought it would be a lovely project for the two of us. That first year we packed one box, for a little boy the same age as my son. The idea of wrapping a gift for a child who'd never had new toys or clothes of his own felt like something special. ๐
The next year we chose the children together - a boy and a girl. Picking out all the goodies was so much fun.
Then I started helping at drop-off. My first celebration was chaos, but the children's faces when they opened their boxes were beyond words. ๐ That's when it hit me: even though we were only giving two boxes, to those two children that box was the most magic they had ever known.
Now I start collecting for next year almost as soon as I've dropped this year's off, and I fill as many boxes as my budget allows. Some years have been hard, but I know every single box counts. ๐
When October draws near, out come the shoeboxes and the wrapping paper. Even my cats get involved, climbing in to test-fit each box and make sure there's room for everything! ๐
Thank you to all the hardworking volunteers who make Santa Shoebox the magic that it is.

๐๐Walls can be teachers too. They can hold the alphabet. Pictures that name colours, shapes, animals and emotions. They can show how many stars were earned for kindness, effort or trying again. They can hold the drawing a child can point to and say, โThat one is mine.โ ๐
๐ซThis week, Reaiteka Pre-School is being plastered inside and out.
For 64 children aged three to five, bare bricks are becoming smooth classroom walls that can be cleaned, painted and put to work.
A shack gives a teacher almost no usable classroom surface. ๐
These walls will help Principal Vivian Kilelo teach. They will hold letters, numbers, stories, routines and rewards. They will record progress and celebrate effort.
At Reaiteka, even the walls will teach.

Old enough to worry about a job interview. Young enough to light up over a gift in a shoebox.๐
For a lot of South African teenagers, both are true at once. When the smartest clothes you own are a school uniform, a first job interview becomes something to dread.
So, when a Grade 11 boy opened his Santa Shoebox and found in it a shirt and a tie - something to wear into that interview with his head held high, he cried.
That was just one box, and it made a teenager feel like he could take on the world.
Over the past 20 years, the Santa Shoebox Project has reached more than 1.5 million children, tens of thousands of whom were Grade 11 learners.
๐ฃWhen pledging opens on 1st September, please consider choosing an older child. ๐
Team pledges open on the 1st of August. If you would like pledge up to 20 boxes as a corporate or private group, you can find out more about this here ๐https://santashoebox.org.za/team-pledges/

Gerald Steyn, who plays Dr Uys Wagener in Binnelanders, says the Santa Shoebox Project reminds him of something he likes to believe: people are inherently good. ๐
For 20 years, we have had the privilege of watching 1.35 million shoeboxes prove him right. Each one packed by someone who chose to care for a child they are unlikely to ever meet.
๐Dankie, Gerald. Ons harte klop sommer โn bietjie vinniger.

There is a gift you give us every year too โ and it's priceless. ๐
It is the privilege of being there for this moment. ๐
You shop, you pack the box, you drop it off and you trust us to get it to the child you chose. Then we get to witness the gasp, the happy tears, the fierce little hug around something new and entirely their own.
๐Thank you for your generosity, and for choosing, year after year, to put joy into the hands of a child.
From all of us, and from every child who has experienced this joy: thank you.

LADUUUUMA! ๐ฟ๐ฆ
Somewhere in South Africa, a child is watching Bafana Bafana and dreaming. Of the ball at their feet. The flag on their chest. The moment a whole nation rises and roars their name.
Dreams often begin like this. In a living room. On a dusty field. With someone in green and gold showing a child what might be possible.
That same belief lives inside every Santa Shoebox. The message that a child matters, their dreams matter, and their future is worth backing.
Tonight, we cheer for Bafana Bafana. We cheer for every child watching. We cheer for the dreams taking shape all across our country.
Play with heart. Make us proud. Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie! ๐๐

Some of the most important parts of a building are the ones no one ever sees. ๐
This week at Reaiteka Pre-School, the ceiling went in - boards overhead and a layer of insulation behind them. The children will never see it, but itโs one of the parts that matters most.
Maruping sits 15 kilometres outside Kuruman, in the Northern Cape, and right now itโs winter there. For years, 26 of Reaitekaโs little ones started their mornings in a rusted corrugated iron shack that was a freezer in winter. A cold classroom isnโt just uncomfortable. Children who are freezing canโt concentrate and they get sick more often. ๐
This layer is what holds the warmth in, so that 64 three-, four- and five-year-olds can spend their winter mornings learning instead of shivering. ๐ฅณ
