That tension is recognised by the body as a stress (or threat), and the body responds by adapting — rebuilding the muscle stronger than before.

Why do women over 65 fall more than men?
It's not just about balance -- it's also about reactivity. As early as age 25, we begin losing certain muscle fibers that help us react quickly to slips or stumbles. Together with this, women, in particular, have lower muscle mass and bone density than men, making falls more likely and more dangerous.
