NSRI midnight mercy mission

NSRI Hermanus crews carried out a successful overnight medical evacuation at sea after a 57-year-old Indonesian seafarer aboard a container vessel suffered a serious medical emergency.

The operation began shortly after 23:00 on Monday, when ships' agents alerted the NSRI and Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) to the incident aboard the vessel sailing off the coast towards Walker Bay.

After consultation between an EMS doctor, the ship's medical crew, and the vessel's master, it was decided that the patient required urgent evacuation to hospital.

NSRI Hermanus launched the rescue craft The Legacy with a maritime extrication crew and two ER24 paramedics. The rescue team rendezvoused with the nearly 400-metre-long vessel about 10 nautical miles offshore of Hermanus.

Using a pilot ladder, two NSRI crew members and a paramedic boarded the ship, where the patient was stabilised before being transferred in a specialised stretcher during a technical high-angle rescue operation.

The patient was brought ashore to the NSRI Hermanus station and transported by ER24 ambulance to hospital. He was later transferred to a Cape Town hospital, where he is recovering.

NSRI commended the ship's master and crew, as well as all emergency services involved, for their cooperation in the successful rescue.

These recyclers improve soil, water infiltration and reduce pests, but may be harmed by veterinary parasite treatments (e.g., fluralaner) excreted in dog waste. To reduce risk, monitor dogs on leads and dispose of waste in a bin. Simple responsible behaviour helps preserve Overstrand’s fynbos, dunes and wetlands.

At 23:01, Monday, 15 June, NSRI Hermanus duty crew were placed on alert following calls to the NSRI Hermanus duty phone and to NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) from ships agents reporting a medical emergency onboard a container motor vessel - on the Cape South Coast, offshore of Agulhas National Park, with the vessel heading in the direction towards Walker Bay.

MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) were alerted and a WC Government Health EMS duty doctor, in cooperation with EMS Metro Control, communicated with the motor vessel ships medical crew and the Master of the ship.
It was determined that a 57 year old male Indonesian seafarer, with an emergency medical condition, needed to be evacuated to hospital as soon as possible.

NSRI Hermanus crew, already mobilising towards the NSRI Hermanus station 17 rescue base, were formally activated.

An EMS rescue squad was placed on alert and ER24 ambulance services activated to respond to our NSRI rescue base.

The fully laden 399.9 meter container motor vessel, at that stage offshore of Danger Point, in communications assisted by Telkom Maritime Radio Services, were requested to approach Walker Bay, offshore of Hermanus.

Our NSRI rescue craft The Legacy was launched accompanied by our NSRI MEX (Maritime Extrication) crew and by 2 ER24 rescue paramedics.

In fair sea conditions, with 2.5 meter sea swells, we rendezvoused with the motor vessel 10 nautical miles offshore of Hermanus, in Walker Bay.

In communications with the ships Master he was requested to head in a direction into the sea swells at an appropriate speed while creating a lee for our rescue craft to come alongside at midships where, using their combination pilots ladder, 2 NSRI MEX crew and an ER24 rescue paramedic were transferred onto the vessel followed by medical and extrication equipment.

The patient, in a serious condition, was stabilised by the ER24 paramedic, in cooperation with the ships medical crew, while our NSRI MEX crew established technical high angle extrication transfer equipment, assisted by the ships crew.

Communications with the ships crew and with the ships medical crew were assisted by a ships language translator onboard the vessel.

Once the patient was medically stabilised, in a technical high angle operation, secured into a Bauman bag specialised stretcher, assisted by the ships crew, the patient was transferred onto our rescue craft and he was taken into the care of the ER24 paramedic that was still onboard our rescue craft, followed by the rescue crew and the rescue equipment.

In the care of the ER24 paramedics the patient was brought to our NSRI rescue base and he was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition by ER24 ambulance.

NSRI has commended the Master of the ship and his crew for their cooperation and their assistance during this urgent emergency technical medical evacuation operation as well as our NSRI Hermanus crew and the ER24 rescue paramedics.

The operation was completed at 04h43 on Tuesday morning.

The container motor vessel has continued on her voyage.

In communications with ER24, NSRI has learned that the patient has been transferred by ER24 ambulance to a hospital in Cape Town where he is recovering in the care of doctors and nurses with all hopes and wishes that he makes a full recovery.

NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre), NSRI Hermanus duty controllers, TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority) Port of Table Bay Port Control, TNPA Port Health, Telkom Maritime Radio Services, WC Government Health EMS Metro Control and an EMS duty doctor, the SA Police Services and Police Sea Borderline Control, the ships agents and the Master of the container motor vessel, assisted MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) in the logistics and coordination of this successful medical emergency evacuation operation.

Bamboo Beach Restaurant in Sandbaai has become a beloved community hub in four years, led by owners Johan and Leentjie van Schalkwyk. Tree planting on municipal land

Residents are reminded to follow the correct approval process before planting trees on municipal land, including pavements and sidewalks. Applications must be submitted in writing so the municipality can assess space, underground and overhead services, visibility, pedestrian access and species suitability. Preference is given to indigenous, drought‑resistant trees; thorn species are discouraged. The Urban Tree Policy lists recommended trees and application forms are available on the municipal website.

Last week’s handover of the Overstrand electricity petition to the Minister of Electricity and Energy was a necessary step, signalling community refusal to accept unreliable power and demanding accountability from national government. Petitions can vanish into bureaucracy, so sustained organisation and pressure are essential if change is to follow. The Overstrand’s message is clear: reliable electricity is a right worth fighting for. The municipality also responded humanely to recent migration-related displacements in Gansbaai, Stanford and Kleinmond.

FynArts opening weekend

The emerging Zwelihle Youth Choir opened the festival with rapturous applause, while Charl du Plessis and conductor Richard C**k provided light-hearted banter at the Mozart, Mambo and Merlot concert. Violinist Johanna Roos and organist Diederick Basson paired for a lyrical performance of The Lark Ascending, and Strijdom van der Merwe drew crowds at Gearing’s Point for Sculpture on the Cliffs. Festival founder Mary Faure was spotted with sculptor Jaco Sieberhagen, and Frank Kilbourn opened the Time and Tide exhibition.
