Decks are made from treated lumber, composite material, teak, mahogany and other hardwoods. Artificial decking products are often called "wood-plastic composites" A deck is also the surface used to construct a boardwalk over sand on barrier islands and dunes. A boardwalk, in the conventional sense, is a wooden walkway for pedestrians and sometimes vehicles, often found along beaches, but they are also common as paths through wetlands, coastal dunes, and other sensitive environments. A boardwalk along a river is often known as a riverwalk and a boardwalk along an oceanfront is often known as an ocean-way. Aside from their obvious pedestrian usage, boardwalks have been used to create commercial districts and enable commerce along waterfronts where conventional streets would have been more expensive because of a beach or other waterfront feature. Although boardwalks can be found around the world, they are especially common along the coast of South Africa and the forest areas.
