PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE
Peripheral vascular disease is a progressive disorder of circulation most commonly caused by plaque buildup (atherosclerosis). Narrowing, blockage and spasm in a blood vessel can cause PVD. It can affect any blood vessel in the body. Commonly, it affects the legs.
Risk factors include males, increasing age, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, high cholesterol, smoking and obesity.
The most common symptom is painful cramping in the leg with walking, which is better after rest. Loss of hair, a change in skin colour and the formation of non-healing wounds on the ankles and lower legs are other common findings.
The disease can be prevented by addressing risk factors.
Early treatment is essential to avoid serious complications such as amputation.
