Feel-Good-Friday: Celebrating Our Covid Survivors

As we celebrated #OrangeFriday today with the intention of spreading joy and happiness, we end off another tough week on a positive note, with the good news of having two more COVID-19 survivors!

Discharged from Ward A1 to home was Mr Jacobus Grebe (37) and back to Beaufort West Hospital, Ms Leah Jacobs (59). Ms Jacobs was treated in High Care using High Flow Nasal Oxygen Therapy (HFNO). We celebrate both of them for fighting so hard and all the others patients like them who’ve beaten Covid-19, under very difficult circumstances. It can feel a lonely battle for patients without the support of their families around them. We recognise the extraordinary burden that the visitor restrictions places on our frontline colleagues who everyday courageously and selflessly step into the role of being a friend, a daughter, a sibling or a mother to our patients alongside their healthcare worker responsibilities.

What an amazing team! Thank you to everyone at George Hospital for going above and beyond the call of duty and for being pillars of strength to our patients during these challenging times.

Orange Happiness & A Dose of Vitamin C

In these stressful times when our frontline workers have to fill the void of family members who are unable to be side-by-side with their loved ones while they recover in COVID wards, is a task which requires staff to be both mentally and physically strong.

Courageous acts like these make staff appreciation and wellness initiatives such as #OrangeFriday so important. The purpose of this day was not only to acknowledge our frontline staff for being brave and for staying strong, but also to THANK all levels of employees for being team players who goes above and beyond the call of duty to serve the community.

More than this, #ORANGEFRIDAY as the name suggests brought light-hearted humour into the workplace to help brighten the mood with colour and to boost the immune system with Vitamin C. Also thinking about our colleagues who are going through a difficult time at the moment, #ORANGEFRIDAY symbolises the hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Orange, we were so glad to see you… Thank You!

A message to all George Hospital Staff...

Thank you to an amazing George Hospital team. Thank you for all your dedication and hard work. It has been an extremely busy and pressured week, but also a deeply sad and emotional one that has tested every staff member’s resilience. No one has been left untouched by the trauma and pain of our patients, their families, of our colleagues and of our community.

Through all of this I have been struck time and time again how individuals and teams have stood up and responded to the requests that have been asked of them. The response has been uniformly positive from everyone, whether working on the frontline or support staff, admin, finance, HR, workshop and managers that enable those directly caring for and treating patients for patients to do their work. Not once has anyone uttered the word “no”, regardless of the size of the request or the seemingly unrealistic timescale to complete the task or their own personal doubt. The reply has consistently echoed a version of “we’ll make it happen”, or “we’ll find a way” … and you always did. Solutions have emerged from a collective that exceeded what most us would have thought possible.

Beyond the innovation and determination, I have witnessed and experienced so many examples of compassion and caring. To each and everyone of you “Thank you” Thank you for all that you’ve done and all that you’ve given. Thank you to those who are working this weekend. Thank you for those who also have an opportunity to rest, replenish and start again next week.

I feel deeply proud and grateful to be a part Team George Hospital.

GRH staff recognised for service excellence.

George Hospital was recently represented in the prestigious Western Cape Government 2020 Service Excellence Awards (SEA) by two staff members who were recognised for being hard at work behind the scenes to render an excellent public service during a year of many unprecedented challenges.

Ms Sharmane Janki, Deputy Director: Finance, Supply Chain and Information Management and Mr Clint Cornelson, ECM Support Clerk were part of 29 nominees across seven categories. Ms Janki and Mr Cornelson were finalists in the respective categories of Exemplary Leader and Inspirational Support Employee after being nominated by their colleagues for going above and beyond to make an impactful difference.

The year 2020 has taken everyone out of their comfort zones into the unknown, yet both these individuals stayed committed to quality and supportive patient-care services. In a time when employees fell ill and being short staffed, Ms Janki’s compassionate approach as a leader helped to pull her staff through the most stressful of times. Ms Janki took employee wellness to the next level by introducing staff to the Jerusalema dance challenge which brought much-need fun and laughter into the hospital during a period of significant distress, this while ensuring staff had appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and maintaining the same level of quality service delivery.

“I am beyond blessed and humbled for the recognition, but I could not have done this without the George Hospital team, both staff and peers who have been a source of great support and have consistently displayed a spirt of team effort,” said Ms Janki.

Service excellence involves going that extra mile to make a difference, Mr Clint Cornelson went all the way to be of support to our public by taking the initiative to arrange tablets from head office to enable COVID-19 patients to stay in contact with their loved ones during their time of hospitalisation – this put our patients more at ease and gave them that boost of courage to stay strong while recovering.

Mr Cornelson reflected on the ceremony, saying it was an honour to represent George Regional Hospital, Department of Health as a nominee in the Inspirational Support Employee category. “Each nominee truly represented the core values and slogan of the Western Cape Government being that we are BETTER TOGETHER,” said Mr Cornelson.
As we move forward, we are inspired by to keep striving for excellence and to continue to serve our public with big and small acts of kindness.

George Hospital express gratitude to the givers.

There is a saying that goes “the more things change; the more things stay the same”. This is true in the sense of, throughout the pandemic and these abnormal times, one thing remained unchanged and that is the overwhelming support from local community members and donors abroad reaching out to us with big and small acts of kindness.

On this #MadloveMonday, we would like to show our love and appreciation with a special thank you to the following donors:

•Glenwood House School Parents Association
Glenwood House School Parents Association for their generous donation towards our Oncology Department as a token of appreciation for the hospital’s cancer services.

•Autism Western Cape
Occupational Therapist, Dianka Oosthuizen from Carpe Diem School on behalf of Autism Western Cape, kind-heartedly donated 15 much-needed stimulation bags as well as five informative communication guides to our Autism patients.

•Eden and George Lions
Face masks has become an essential part of our every-day dress code to protect ourselves against contracting COVID-19. Thanks to a COVID-19 grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation, Eden and George Lions Clubs were able to donate much-needed surgical masks to the George Hospital.

•Hekelklub Nederland
The little ones in our Neo-Natal ICU were blessed with early Christmas gifts all the way from the Netherlands. Hekelklub Nederland donated the most beautiful hand crocheted blankets made with love to keep the little bodies warm during our Winter months.
