Some honesty: it's been the toughest 3 months for our little household - between the 3 of us we saw the doctor 6 times in the space of a month 🥴 being in a new province it was a rough ride but after our little boy finally had grommets done I can say that I got NOWHERE close to the goals I had set out for myself in February, March and April. Isn't this just how motherhood is? Brutal yet so BEAUTIFUL 😍
I look forward to what lies ahead for BabyGym in the up and coming months 😉 keep your eyes peeled 👣

🦵🏼HIP FLEXION 🧸

The hip flexes when the knee is brought closer to the chest. This is one of the first large movements that allows baby to use the upper and lower body independently and usually occurs spontaneously when baby is placed on their back and given enough time and opportunity to freely kick in the air.

Along with other 'core' muscles of the torso and glutes, the hip flexors are key muscles in stabilising the pelvis and spine. This allows a baby to move and explore without the risk of injuring the lower back and makes it possible to reach milestones like rolling, sitting, crawling and walking.

💥 PINCER GRIP ✏

When baby is born, baby's hands are nearly always closed. Baby can’t learn and explore if the hands are clenched, and that is why parents and caregivers are encouraged to patiently massage the hands to open them up, so they are ready to explore and learn.

✔Between the ages of two and four months, baby first swipes with the hands, without realising that ‘those hands belong to me’. The day baby's brain makes the connection, baby becomes fascinated by the hands and can watch them, turning them constantly, for minutes on end.
✔From about four and a half months onwards baby can move the hands, half-opened, towards an object while lying on the back or on the tummy.
✔At about six months baby can grasp an object, hold it firmly and even pass it from one hand to the other.

Baby's thumb is now separating from the rest of the fingers; baby is getting ready for the pincer grip. In time baby discovers how well the thumbs and index fingers work together, just like the pincers of an ant.

Using the thumb and index finger (the so-called skilled fingers) to pick up small objects, refines and improves the fine motor movements of the hands. The middle finger, ring finger, and little finger are the support fingers that help the two ‘skilled fingers’ to select and hold on.

Holding on is one thing, but baby also needs to learn how to let go. It’s only at about nine months of age that baby learns how to drop a toy intentionally and when baby reaches their first birthday, baby discovers how much fun it is to put objects in a container.

The hands and language centre of the brain are part of the same neurological pathway - as baby develops their grasp and fine motor movements, baby is also developing their language abilities.

🖐🏼 BODY AWARENESS 🖐🏼

Body awareness (sometimes also called proprioception) means to know where different body parts are in space. Body awareness does not only start to develop once baby is born, while in-utero a mommy's womb creates a firm boundary around baby and movement against the womb makes baby aware of the different body parts. Natural birth, strong contractions and moving through the birth canal further develops a baby's awareness of his or her own body. Should a baby be born a different way, deep pressure massage is a wonderful way to relax baby and to develop body awareness. Once the body map is more complete, the brain recognises the different body parts and wants to use them to respond, hence the link between a baby and a toddler’s body awareness and gross motor development (also called big muscle development).
