The Future of Props and Make-Up Effects: 3D Printing Large Props and Moulds With the Form 3L for “Raised by Wolves” Season 2

1: Replacing Life-Casting - Actress Duplicate, Likeness Dummy

In this example, we were tasked with creating a hyper-realistic silicone replica of an actress’s body. The catch being that she needed to be hanging from her neck with half of her face missing.

Traditionally we would make a silicone life-cast of the actress where we would physically cover her face with silicone and plaster bandage to create a disposable mould of her face. From this life-cast, we would create a clay cast on which we would sculpt the extra details required for the scene by hand. In this case, this meant elongating her neck and removing parts of her face.

This clay sculpture would then be remoulded using epoxy resin and fiberglass. From this final mould, we would then create the final silicone replica head. This would have been a three-week process that would have to be overseen by at least three experienced artists and technicians—and the replica head is still just raw silicone needing to be painted, and have hair painstakingly punched in to achieve the hyper-realism required. In total, this process would have taken about a month from start to finish.

The Future of Props and Make-Up Effects: 3D Printing Large Props and Moulds With the Form 3L for “Raised by Wolves” Season 2

In 2020, we interviewed Jaco Snyman, founder of award-winning practical prosthetic make-up effects and prop-making company Dreamsmith Studio, and Lead Prosthetics Designer of the sci-fi series “Raised by Wolves.” At the time, Snyman told us about his workflow to produce 3D printed moulds and end-use models, displayed on-screen for the first season of the show.

The HBO Max series, created by Aaron Guzikowski and produced by Ridley Scott, centres on two androids, Father and Mother, with the mission of raising human children. The show returned for its second season in February 2022, featuring an even wider range of props and prosthetics made with the help of 3D printing—this time printed on a fleet of large-format Form 3L stereolithography (SLA) printers.

In this article, written by Snyman and his team, they show us how Dreamsmith used the Form 3L to print large moulds and models to bring aliens, androids, and other props to life in the apocalyptic world of “Raised by Wolves.”

Food safe means that a food grade material meets the requirements determined by the intended use and will not create a food-safety hazard.
Food contact surfaces include any surface that may come into direct contact with food. These surfaces must be made of nontoxic materials and designed to withstand the environment of their intended use, including exposure to cleaning compounds, sanitizing agents, and cleaning procedures.

Meaningful uses of 3D Printing in Gardening

You might be thinking, why would anyone 3D print flower pots? You can buy clay pots relatively cheaply in your local gardening or flower shop. However, there are many cool tricks that 3D printing enables – from self-watering planters and inserts, oddly shaped pots and avocado boats to propagating stations and grow light holders. As it usually is with 3D printing, your imagination is the limit!

Make it functional
It’s not easy to guess how much water your plants need. Having a planter with holes on the bottom and a tray beneath it makes this a lot easier. If the tray is empty you know the plant needs watering soon. And maybe, more importantly, it’s nearly impossible to overwater the plant because the water has an escape route (the tray will overflow).

The downsides are that A) you might not like the way it looks, especially indoors. And B) it doesn’t really solve the problem of you having to actively water the plant quite often unless you buy or print a pretty big tray.

Seat Gap Organizer

Sometimes everything you need just doesn’t fit by your side in the car; that’s where this design comes in. You can use this seat gap organizer to add some extra storage space between your seat and the divider while organizing your things. This model features a cup holder and a large, rectangular holding space, with a hole at the bottom for a charging wire.

The designer posted two sizes for this item, one with a 250-mm length and one with a 200-mm length. The maker also pointed out that you can mirror the same model digitally and print it again to make another organizer for the other (passenger side) seat.

The creator of this design suggests printing this organizer in a material that has a high glass transition temperature to withstand the heat inside the car, especially on summer days. They also stated that they printed the model with a 0.2-mm layer height and a 15% infill density.
