Aristotle spent a huge part of his life studying what makes a good life, and he landed on something surprisingly simple: happiness isn't a feeling that happens to you, it's a practice. He called it eudaimonia, a kind of flourishing that comes from living in line with your own values, not from luck or circumstance. It's a helpful reframe on hard days.

De Beauvoir wrote this in 1949, and it's still one of the most quietly radical sentences in philosophy. Her point wasn't about biology, it was about the idea that so much of what we're told "womanhood" should look like is handed to us, not chosen by us.
Empowerment, in her view, meant becoming the author of your own life rather than a character in someone else's script. It's a reminder that you get to decide, again and again, who you are becoming.

Long before self-love was a hashtag, Socrates was already saying it starts with self-knowledge. He believed most of our suffering comes from acting on autopilot, chasing things we don't actually want because we've never stopped to ask what we truly value. Self-love isn't bubble baths and affirmations (though those help). It's the slower, harder work of actually knowing who you are, what you need, and what you're willing to walk away from.
This week, take five minutes before you say yes to something. Ask yourself if it's really what you want.

Okay, so if you’ve been into Sjop at Railways, you may have noticed that we’ve added something a little different to our shelves…
Tea. But not just any tea.
We’re now an official stockist of the Lize Mouton Collection, or LMC, and I absolutely love the story behind this brand.
It’s a South African, female-founded collection of beautiful rooibos teas, with the rooibos coming from the Citrusdal Valley here in South Africa.
And these are definitely not your boring everyday cup of tea. There are the most beautiful blends, from floral and fresh to richer, more comforting flavours, and we also have gorgeous LMC teaware that makes the whole ritual feel a little more special.
It just made sense for Sjop. We’re all about fragrance, gifting, beautiful things and those small everyday rituals that make life feel a bit more luxurious.
So over the next few weeks I’m going to introduce you to some of the different LMC blends, tell you what they taste like and, obviously, we’re going to have to drink some tea together. 🍵
