To be honest—yes!

Every year, there is usually at least one child who stands out. The reasons vary. Some children with additional needs naturally require a little more attention and support. The challenge is to ensure they are treated like everyone else while still receiving what they need to succeed and shine.

The truth is that every child has individual needs.

This year’s challenge has been a young boy with exceptional mathematical ability. He learns quickly and needs to be constantly stimulated and challenged. After all, nobody wants to come to school and be bored!

Working alongside other educators and sharing ideas has made all the difference. Watching his growth and enthusiasm has been an absolute joy.

The takeaway?

Yes, some children stand out—but not always because they are struggling. Sometimes they stand out because they need something different. As educators, it is important that we do our research, collaborate with colleagues, and learn from one another’s experiences. Yes, sometimes we face denial, and sometimes parents simply don’t understand the gravity of what we are trying to communicate.

When we put ourselves in their shoes, the difficulty and denial often become easier to understand. As educators, it is important to remind parents that we are on the same team. We all want what is best for the child.

Communication matters—not only what we say, but how we say it. Be clear in your recommendations and concerns, while reassuring parents that you are not giving up on their child. This is a journey we are tackling together.

Praise also goes a long way. Don’t focus only on what isn’t working; celebrate what is. “Your child has improved so much in this area.” “We’re seeing progress here.” Then discuss the areas that still need support.

Building a child’s confidence starts with building the confidence of the adults supporting them. Together, we can give every child the best opportunity to succeed. ❤️
