Area Code is an urban and counter-culture brand encompassing an underground magazine, media house & photography studio.

Area Code seeks to build a dialogue around South African life by detailing the intersections of art and culture. Rather than focusing on the current of culture, the contributors who write for Area Code cover the aesthetic of culture to uncover an objective take on how culture moves through Africa.

We aim to summon a prophet of creativity, in order to fulfil this mission Area Code focuses on the aesthetics of culture today, covering everything from garage barbers to underground art exhibitions, fashion shows, drifting, illustration and interviews with unknown inner-city personas.

Area Code is urban. Brazen. Counter-culture. Fringe. Kaapstad. We’re the 021’s residing urban counter-culture publication. Our stakeholders have won awards at the Loeries, Creative Circle & Ad of the Month, which constitutes the creative industry’s highest honours.
