Dipstick Dilemmas
When was the last time you checked your dipsticks personally? Here are a few things to consider:
• Most of the oil companies require you to do manual dips each day as well as before & after each fuel delivery. This is in conjunction with your ATG readings (if you have ATG installed).
• If you're using wooden dipsticks remember to dip for volume first and then for water. Dipping for volume is normally 5 seconds and for water 4 minutes. If you dip for water first, the fuel will be absorbed into the wood and the reading level will be higher than the actual volume in the tanks.
• When you've added water finding paste to the dipstick, do not slide that side of the stick against the dip pipe as there may be water condensed inside the dip pipe, giving a false reading.
• If you store your dipsticks on top of a gas cage or some other area that is shorter than the dip stick, the ends of the stick will bend down over time. If bent enough, the end of the stick may not land on the touch plate on the tank bottom, but next to it, giving an incorrect reading. It's best to install a PVC pipe on the side of the building, long enough to store the dipsticks safely.
• You should never store wooden dipsticks in the dip pipe.
• If a dipstick has worn off or been cut, you will have a consistently higher reading than the actual volume. If you're only using the manual dip readings, this will result in variances on your fuel reconciliation.
• If a dipstick has been made longer by adding a piece or combining 2 broken sticks, you'll have a consistently lower reading than the actual volume.
• Remember that you should use hydrocarbon resistant gloves when handling dipsticks.
National Earth day – 22 April 2017
What is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and celebrated in more than 193 countries each year.
The Earth day Network drives numerous projects in support of the Earth, we have chosen to get behind 100% Renewable Cities Project for 2017.
100% renewable — What does it mean?
Earth Day Network is calling on cities to go 100% renewable by 2050. We want all of our consumed energy to be created by renewable energy sources– sun, wind and water! This means investing heavily in technology such as wind turbines and next-generation solar panels. Only by converting our energy grid to 100% renewable sources can we stop climate change.
Why do we need to go 100% renewable?
More people are moving to cities than ever before. Currently, more than half of the world’s population resides in cities. By 2050, the UN predicts the global population will be over two-thirds urban. The world’s cities are housing million and millions of residents, with much of the growth in areas that are not able to rapidly adapt to climate change.
One billion people still live on less than $1.25 per day and those most affected by climate change are low-income or marginalized populations. The effects of climate change will only intensify if we don’t stop misusing the planet. Moving towards a 100% renewable and climate change resilient society is possible, but only in a world where all countries commit to a low carbon future. We have the technology. Now we need the political will to begin this change.
With your help, we will push for a universal climate agreement that limits global warming to 2°C at this year’s UN Climate Summit in Paris. We must come together to demand climate action from our leaders!
Why 2°C?
Scientists agree that that greenhouse gas emissions that increase global temperatures beyond 2°C will irreversibly alter climatic regions all over the world, making fierce natural weather phenomena a daily occurrence.
Moving to renewable energy has the potential to be cost-effective and transform the way we interact with our environment. Divestment from fossil fuels, green buildings, and sustainable cities must drive this change.
We have to start from the bottom up– show our representatives that we will lead where they cannot. This starts in your city!
Raising environmental awareness amongst employees is an important part in your environmental management system. Use this earth day to raise awareness on important issues such as climate change and the challenges brings. Earth day also encourages tree planting to mark this day! Launched in 2016, its goal is to plant, or inspire the planting of, 7.8 billion trees worldwide by 2020—one for every person projected to be on Earth.
