YOUNG FEMALE NIU OPERATOR BREAKS BARRIERS IN SAPS SPECIALISED UNIT
By Mr Lee
Mbyana ya Mahungu
PRETORIA – As South Africa celebrates Youth Month, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is shining a spotlight on a 34-year-old female National Intervention Unit (NIU) operator who is proving that determination and resilience can overcome any barrier.
The officer, whose identity remains confidential for security reasons, is one of only 10 active female NIU operators in the country. Since joining SAPS in 2016, she has risen through the ranks by embracing challenges that test both physical and mental strength.
After starting her policing career at Amanzimtoti Police Station, she pursued her dream of joining the elite NIU and successfully completed the unit's demanding 11-month training programme in 2019.
Today, she not only participates in high-risk operations but also serves as an assistant trainer, helping to prepare future operators for the realities of specialised policing.
The NIU is responsible for tackling serious and violent crimes, including kidnappings, cash-in-transit robberies, gang-related crimes, illegal mining activities and public unrest incidents.
The officer says success in the unit depends not only on physical fitness but also on mental resilience and the ability to remain focused under extreme pressure.
Her story forms part of SAPS' Youth Month campaign, highlighting young officers who are contributing to safer communities and leading the organisation's reset agenda.

Funeral Underway for Giyani Man Found Murdered in CBD as Police Continue Probe
The funeral is underway for 28-year-old Ntalo Chauke from Section D1, who was allegedly murdered after his body was discovered in the Giyani Central Business District.
Chauke’s lifeless body was found on Wednesday, 24 May 2026, during a police patrol near KFC at Masingita Mall. Police were alerted by an employee of an engineering company that was installing Telkom fibre cables in the area.
The employee told police that while working with colleagues, they noticed a person lying in nearby bushes. Upon checking, they discovered an unknown male who was unresponsive.
The workers observed bruises on the victim’s neck and immediately called Emergency Medical Services (EMS), who later declared him dead at the scene.
An inquest docket was initially opened, and a post-mortem examination was conducted. The results later confirmed that Chauke suffered throat injuries caused by violent action, indicating that his death was not natural.
Following the post-mortem findings, the matter was reported to the police on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, and a murder case was opened.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Chauke was allegedly in the company of other people before his death. Police said the suspects remain unknown and investigations are continuing.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged anyone with information that could assist with the investigation to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Solly Maluleke, on 073 730 3513, Crime Stop on 08600 10111, visit the nearest police station, or use the MySAPS App.
Police investigations continue as Chauke’s family and community members gather to lay him to rest on Saturday, 6 June 2026.
