The heart of a Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) is a platinum sensing element—most commonly a Pt100 or Pt1000 resistor. This element changes its electrical resistance in a precise and predictable way as temperature changes. Because platinum offers excellent stability, repeatability, and long-term accuracy, it has become the industry standard for high-precision temperature measurement.

The sensing element is typically manufactured as either a wire-wound or thin-film resistor and is protected inside a stainless-steel probe for harsh industrial environments. When connected to a transmitter or measuring instrument, the resistance change is converted into an accurate temperature reading used in process control, power generation, oil & gas, chemical plants, and many other industries.
