Union Pacific 4014 - A Giant in Glen Onoko

Riding on Reading & Northern trackage across the Lehigh River, Union Pacific’s massive 4-8-8-4 “Big Boy” 4014 makes an impressive sight as the engine thunders overhead. Seen from near the Glen Onoko falls as the giant steam engine passes through the Lehigh Gorge State Park.

“The Happening” 📸🚂🚂

Union Pacific 4014 and Reading & Northern 2102 race down the line, on either side, crowds have gathered in the hundreds armed with cameras, camcorders and cellphones all recording this historic moment. Approaitly dubbed by some railfans around me as, “The Happening!” Cause, well, its happening...

The chase of Union Pacific Railroad #4014 from outside Chicago, Indiana, to Buffalo, New York. A historic journey for this massive steam engine! A rare mileage journey on Norfolk Southern trackage and featuring both NS and UP #1776 units

Union Pacific 4014 - One in Vermillion

Union Pacific 4014 eases over the Norfolk Southern bridge, crossing the Vermillion River in Vermillion, Ohio. As the massive 4-8-8-4 Big Boy crosses over, Engineer Ed Dickens gives a brief blow down over the bridge for the many people watching both on land and out on the water.

Union Pacific 4014 - Rumble and Roar

Bound for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as part of the 250th celebration of the United States, Union Pacific’s massive 4-8-8-4 articulated steam engine, 4014, roars through North East, Pennsylvania. Much to the delight of the crowd, nearly every spot I went to, the crowd cheered after the massive engine thundered by.

As for me, a childhood dream had finally come true!

Reading 2102 - Black and White Haven

Roaring through White Haven, Pennsylvania, Reading 2102 whistles for the crossing at Berwick Street as the massive 4-8-4 steam engine heads towards Penobscot, Pennsylvania.

Norfolk and Western 611 - Country Run

Hauling the last train of the day, N&W 611 makes its way east through Swoop, Virginia, bound for Staunton. Running good, the steam engine only leaves a light wisp of gray smoke as the engine chugs under Hewitt Road.

Conemaugh & Black Lick 111 - Just Like the Old Days

The little EMD SW7 switcher works a short cut of freight cars down an industrial spur, finally seeing sunlight after a rainy morning.

Taken on Kodak Portra 800 on a Canon EOS 30, you cannot deny that, if you were to view this image at a passing glance, believe that it was taken some time back in the 1980s or 1990s. And with the use of the WMSR trackage in downtown Cumberland to look like it was in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, it really did feel like the old days.

WMSR 1309 - C&P Bridge 2

Pulling that last train of the day, Western Maryland 1309 storms across the old Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad No. 2 bridge. This bridge crosses over the original Western Maryland right of way, the WMSR uses the C&P line to bridge up and over to Frostburg, Maryland.
