Half of all U.S. states, 25 to be exact, carry Native American names. Today we will be taking a look at the 25 states and the meanings of their names. They will be listed in alphabetical order.
1. Alabama: Named after the Alabama, or Alibamu tribe, a Muskogean-speaking tribe. Sources are split between the meanings 'clearers of the thicket' or 'herb gatherers'.

The Inuit people can''t be imagined without their signature parkas, fashioned from fur and hide of the local wildlife. One of the many reasons why early European voyages into the Arctic circle failed is because they were underprepared for the extreme weather conditions of the north. They wore wool clothing, which kept them hot on the inside, but made them sweat a lot, which made their clothing freeze in the extreme temperatures. The Inuit never faced this problem, as they have been making their parkas from caribou deer or seal hide from as early as 22,000 BC (Siberia). The production of these parkas took weeks, and the tradition of making them was passed down from mother to daughter, taking years to master. Depending on the geographical location of the tribes, the design of the parkas varied according to the types of animals available. Beadwork, fringes and pendants frequently decorated the clothing. Roald Amundsen was the first explorer who outfitted his crew with Inuit clothing, which enabled him to successfully circumvent the North-West Passage in 1906. In the 20th century the use of traditional Inuit clothing declined, but it has seen a recent resurgence, as the Inuit strive to preserve their culture.

America Was, Is, and Will Always Be Indigenous Land
Skyscrapers may rise. Cities may expand. Technology may transform the landscape.
But no matter how much concrete is poured or glass is stacked into the sky, one truth remains unchanged:
This land was, and still is, Indigenous land.
For thousands of years before colonization, Native nations thrived hereโeach with their own languages, cultures, governance, and sacred relationship to the land. Their presence and legacy run deeper than any building ever could.
This imageโof a proud Native dancer standing in the heart of modern Americaโreminds us that Indigenous identity is not something of the past. It lives, it resists, and it reclaims space even in the most commercialized corners of the country.
This is more than a statementโit's a demand for truth, visibility, and respect.

Before it was a national park, it was home.
Long before the borders of Glacier National Park were drawn, the land around Upper St. Maryโs Lake was alive with the daily rhythm of Blackfoot life. In the late 19th century, their villages stood in harmony with the rugged peaks, open skies, and clear waters of what is now northwestern Montana. This wasnโt wildernessโit was home, sacred ground passed through generations.
The Blackfoot people, also known as the Niitsitapi, knew every path and plant, every hidden spring and storm-worn trail. They followed the buffalo, honored the spirits in the wind, and gathered near St. Maryโs Lake during summer months for ceremonies, hunting, and trading. Their lodges, often made from buffalo hides stretched across tipi poles, dotted the grassy plains near the shorelineโeach one a shelter, a story, a heartbeat of a thriving nation.
But as the 1800s drew to a close, change crept closer. With settlers, railroads, and eventually the creation of Glacier National Park in 1910, many Blackfoot people were pushed from the very lands their ancestors had called sacred. The tipi rings still found near the lake today are not just remnantsโtheyโre echoes. Echoes of a time when families fished the cold streams, children ran barefoot through wildflower meadows, and the mountains were more than sceneryโthey were kin.
This image, taken in the late 1800s, reminds us: before the fences and signs and postcards, there was life. Rich. Rooted. And deeply real.
