Taboo Nawasha, whose real name is Jaime Luis Gomez, was born on July 14, 1975. He is a musician, rapper, and a member of the renowned band Black Eyed Peas. Taboo is of Native American heritage, belonging to the Shoshone tribe, and he proudly embraces his cultural roots through his career and community efforts.

Taboo is not only known for his musical talent but also for his dedication to raising awareness about Native American culture. He leverages his platform to share stories about the history and heritage of Native communities, emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation and indigenous rights.

One of Taboo’s notable contributions is his song “Stand Up / Stand N Rock” (We Are Standing Rock), released in 2016 to support the movement advocating for clean water and environmental protection at the Standing Rock Reservation. The song earned an award at the Native American Music Awards.

Beyond music, Taboo serves as an ambassador for organizations promoting health, education, and rights for Native American communities. He continues to inspire younger generations with positive messages of resilience and cultural pride.

𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗘𝗙 𝗕𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗛𝗔𝗪𝗞 of the Lipan (some say Kiowa) tribe. W.S. Soule took the photo near Fort Sill, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), during 1869-75.

Slow shutters required total immobility for some seconds and rarely captured such a relaxed expression! Eyebrows, lashes, and facial hair had been plucked. Black Hawk wore a peace medal and an insignia of an Army colonel. There was a curious skin pattern along the right eyelid that extended onto the forehead. The photo was perhaps captured outdoors with use of a backdrop and reflectors. In my home area of Eastern Montana, there were no resident photographers until the arrival of John Fouch in December 1876 at Fort Keogh. Fouch was followed by S.J. Morrow, L.A. Few people realize that the ancestors of Native Americans arrived in North America around 15,000 years ago. Over thousands of years, they built a rich world of diverse communities, complex societies, and distinct cultures—each deeply rooted in the land.

Before Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas in 1492, the Indigenous population is estimated to have reached over 70 million. What is now the United States was home to roughly 562 tribes, each with its own language, traditions, and a deep spiritual connection to nature.

Some of the largest and most well-known tribes include the Cherokee, Navajo, Sioux, Iroquois, Apache, Comanche, Pawnee, Choctaw, Mohawk, Cree, and Ojibwa—each once flourishing and sovereign across vast regions of the continent.

The map below is a rare artifact that captures North America before European contact—a time many refer to as the “Glory Days” of Indigenous nations. While Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya and Aztec fell early to Spanish conquest, many interior North American tribes remained autonomous, some resisting colonial forces well into the 19th and even 20th centuries.

At their peak, Native peoples across the Americas spoke close to 4,000 languages, reflecting a cultural diversity on par with the greatest civilizations in human history.

But the European conquest that began in 1492 brought catastrophe: pandemics, warfare, forced displacement, and slavery caused a dramatic collapse in Indigenous populations. When the United States was founded, Native tribes were officially regarded as “semi-sovereign nations,” yet they were increasingly pushed off their lands, silenced, and stripped of their autonomy.

This map is more than a geographic document—it is a memory of a thriving world erased from most textbooks. It serves as a powerful reminder of the richness, resilience, and rightful place of Indigenous peoples in the history of this land—before that history was rewritten by those who came to conquer it.

COYOTE RUNS, also known as High Bird, about 1905. Coyote Runs was reportedly the son of Alligator Stands Up. The portrait by Fred E. Miller was taken on Montana’s Crow Reservation, southeast of Billings. Miller had worked as a professional photographer before arriving in 1898, but on the Reservation he worked civil service jobs. Miller’s efforts to market his images had failed, and his work was ignored until the 1985 publication of “Fred E. Miller: Photographer of the Crows.”
