Sam Elliott was born on August 9, 1944 in Sacramento, California, and today he rides into his 81st birthday still commanding every frame. From humble beginnings as a guestโstoic in classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Gunsmoke (1972), he drew first blood in leading roles with Frogs (1972) and broke through as the reflective lifeguard in Lifeguard (1976).
His unforgettable turn as the driftโwood cowboy in Mask (1985) cemented his status, then he brought Louis LโAmourโs legends to life in The Quick and the Dead (1987) and earned a Golden Globe nod for Conagher (1991). Veteran praise followed for Buffalo Girls (1995), Gettysburg (1993) and the enigmatic Stranger in The Big Lebowski (1998).
In recent years, Elliottโs deep drawl has echoed from the Academyโnominated warmth of A Star Is Born (2018) to the gritty frontier of 1883 (2021โ22), winning him a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance. Heโs also thrilled fans in Justified, The Ranch and The Hero.
With a Screen Actors Guild Award, a National Board of Review prize and nominations across Oscars, Golden Globes and Emmys, Sam Elliott remains the living emblem of rugged elegance and timeless storytelling. Hereโs to many more rides at sunset!

1910 MYSTERY: How did the photographer get so high above Miles Cityโs Main Street? The shot for this colorized postcard originated from a point about as high as the Wibuax Building (three-story structure at the right), perhaps 60+ feet. The photo was by Thiriโs Aerial View Service of Polson. Before airplanes were flying, Thiri got his shots from building tops, window ledges, grain elevators, poles, tree limbs, mountains. But, none of these explain this shot. Thiri never used a balloon.
Main Street was a dirt road until 1918. Streetlights had been installed in 1909. The Wibaux Building and the Olive Hotel were the best buildings in town. Miles City, population 5,000, was growing rapidly after the arrival of the Milwaukee Railroad (1907) and passage of the Enlarged Homestead Act (1909). [My later post of Feb. 12, 2018, showed an even higher view and explained how Thiri obtained his captures.] -Gary Coffrin.

TEPEE INTERIOR, circa 1905. Edward H. Boos captured the view at the Flathead Reservation in northwest Montana. To better see details, PC users should click the image. The maleโs braids were wrapped, and he was holding cards. A large meat fork was at the lower left; three coffee pots were in the foreground. Bowls and spoons were to the right. Interior shots were uncommon in field work since film speeds were slow. Faces of the females had unrepairable blur from motion, but I used Photoshop to reveal as much detail as possible elsewhere.
Edward Boos was a Missoula photographer known for his photos of the reservation. The Montana reservation is the fourth largest in the USA. It has 5,000 enrolled members of the Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreilles tribes, and about 25,000 non-Native residents. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

โThe Eagleโs Flightโ
They say the Eagle was born not from the earth, but from the wind that carries the breath of the sky.
It does not soar for the sake of flight, but because its wings are made for seeing beyond the horizon.
When clouds gathered, heavy with storms, the Eagle did not seek shelter.
It rose higher, above the storm, where the air was clear and the world below seemed so small.
Its feathers shimmer with the colors of dawn, the light after the rain, and the fire of distant sunsets.
Its eyes, sharp as the mountain peaks, reflect not what is seen, but what is known โ the stories of the land, the wisdom of the sky.
The elders say the Eagle carries the strength of the earth and the wisdom of the stars.
Not in its flight, but in the stillness before it soars โ in the quiet knowing that everything has its place.
It teaches not with words, but with the grace of its wings.
With every beat, it reminds us that true power is not in the struggle, but in the courage to rise above it.
They call him Kรกyรกn โ The One Who Soars Without Effort, the one who shows us that strength is not in the fight, but in the ability to rise when itโs time to rise.
He comes when you need to be reminded:
You donโt have to fight to be free.
You donโt have to struggle to be strong.
You just have to remember the sky is yours โ and spread your wings.

โThe Sacred Buffalo: Heart of the Landโ
In Native cultures, the buffalo is a symbol of abundance, gratitude, and deep connection to the Earth. Every part of the animal was used by Indigenous communities โ not out of need alone, but out of respect. It gave life so others could live.
The intricate patterns across its body in this artwork echo the winds of the plains, the flow of rivers, and the flames of spirit. The red symbolizes life and ceremony. The turquoise flows like water and sky, bringing cleansing and renewal. The black grounds the image, representing strength, endurance, and the eternal memory of ancestors.
This buffalo stands not just as an animal, but as an ancestor, a guardian, a teacher. Its presence reminds us of a time when balance between human and nature was not just honored โ it was necessary.
In todayโs world, the buffalo calls us to remember our roots, to protect what is sacred, and to walk in gratitude for the gifts of the Earth.
