A Kiowa war chief and medicine man, Satank (Set-angia, Sitting Bear) was probably born circa 1800 near the Black Hills of South Dakota and was of Kiowa and Sarsi descent. A member of the Koitsenko warrior society, Satank won notoriety in combat against the Cheyenne, Pawnee, and other Kiowa enemies. Many Kiowa believed he possessed mysterious powers and shunned him. He was one of several leaders who emerged after the death of the chief Dohasan in 1866.
Satank was among those who placed their mark upon the Fort Atkinson Treaty of 1853 and the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867. The latter relegated the Kiowa to a reservation in the Leased District of Indian Territory. His discontentment with reservation life intensified after Texans killed his favorite son in 1870. An elderly but vengeful Satank joined Satanta, Big Tree, and other restless Kiowa, Kiowa-Apache, and Comanche warriors on raids into Texas.
On May 18, 1871, Satank participated in an attack upon a wagon train in which seven teamsters were killed near Fort Richardson, Texas. He was arrested at Fort Sill for his involvement in the massacre and was ordered to stand trial for murder. On June 8, 1871, he was placed securely in a wagon for transport to Jacksboro, Texas. Singing the Koitsenko death song, he assailed his military es**rt and was killed. His body was buried at Fort Sill.

Wes Studi is a native American Cherokee actor and Vietnam veteran.
You may have seen him in a few movies such as "Last of the Mohicans" or "Dances with Wolves". Aside from the movies, he is an activist for both Native Americans and wounded combat veterans.
His first language was Cherokee an Iroquoian language and he didn't learn English until he started grade school.
His native language is an endangered language.
In fact, most of the indigenous languages in the Americas are endangered.
More than one thousand separate languages still spoken in the Americas and most of these languages will be extinct by the end of the next century.

Cherokee Women and Their Important Roles:Women in the Cherokee society were equal to men. They could earn the title of War Women and sit in councils as equals. This privilege led an Irishman named Adair who traded with the Cherokee from 1736-1743 to accuse the Cherokee of having a "petticoat government".Clan kinship followed the mother''s side of the family. The children grew up in the mother''s house, and it was the duty of an uncle on the mother''s side to teach the boys how to hunt, fish, and perform certain tribal duties. The women owned the houses and their furnishings. Marriages were carefully negotiated, but if a woman decided to divorce her spouse, she simply placed his belongings outside the house. Cherokee women also worked hard. They cared for the children, cooked, tended the house, tanned skins, wove baskets, and cultivated the fields. Men helped with some household chores like sewing, but they spent most of their time hunting.Cherokee girls learned by example how to be warriors and healers. They learned to weave baskets, tell stories, trade, and dance. They became mothers and wives, and learned their heritage. The Cherokee learned to adapt, and the women were the core of the Cherokee.

He was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Dances with Wolves. He was born in Ohsweken, a Six Nations (Iroquois) Reserve in Ontario, but later moved to Hamilton where he got a lot of experience with the entertainment industry. Graham started work as an audio technician and later graduated from the Toronto-based Centre for Indigenous Theatre's Native Theatre School program in 1974. He made his TV debut in an episode of The Great Detective in 1979, and his first movie role in Running Brave (1983). Graham played many Native Americans in movies, such as Ishi (The Last of His Tribe), Walter Crow Horse (Thunderheart), Arlen Bitterbuck (The Green Mile), Sitting Bull (Historica). He also narrated Tecumseh! and voiced the Native American elder Chief Rains Fall in the video game Red Dead Redemption 2. In 1997 he suffered from a major depressive episode (MDE) and was hospitalized, but was soon back on his feet after help from Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. Graham also won a Grammy in the category Best Spoken Word Album for Children.

A Shoshone Indian born circa 1788, Sacagawea was kidnapped by the Hidatsa when she was around 12 years old. Eventually, she and another captive were acquired by and married to Toussaint Charbonneau, a French-Canadian trader.When Charbonneau was hired as a translator for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark also wanted to take advantage of Sacagawea’s linguistic knowledge (she could speak both Shoshone and Hidatsa). Sacagawea set out with the expedition on April 7, 1805, only two months after giving birth. She took her son, Jean Baptiste, on the journey, where the presence of mother and child was an indisputable asset — as war parties didn’t take along women and children, the group wasn’t seen as a threat by the tribes they encountered.Sacagawea assisted the expedition in other ways: When a panicked Charbonneau almost capsized a boat, she saved navigational tools, supplies and important papers. She was able to locate edible and medicinal roots, plants and berries. The landmarks she remembered also proved useful in their travels.When the group returned to the Hidatsa-Mandan villages in 1806, Sacagawea didn’t receive any pay (her husband got $500, as well as 320 acres of land). Clark acknowledged the unfairness of this in an 1806 letter to Charbonneau: “[Y]our woman who accompanied you that long dangerous and fatigueing rout to the Pacific Ocian and back diserved a greater reward for her attention and services on that rout than we had in our power to give her....”Sacagawea died in 1812, soon after giving birth to a daughter, Lisette. Indicating how much he’d appreciated her, it was Clark who took responsibility for Sacagawea's children.

Nana (sp. Grandma) (~1810-1896) was a distinguished warchief of the Warm Springs Apache band of the Chiricahua Apache, and the brother-in-law of Geronimo. He got his first taste of battle in raids in Mexico, accompanying the famous chief Mangas Coloradas (see page highlights on Apaches for his biography). After the death of Mangas in 1863, a warrior named Victorio took over as chief of the Mimbres Apaches, another band of the Chiricahua. Together, the two chiefs would try to live peacefully in their homeland until they were forced to fight and defend their homes against the U.S. army's encroachment. Facing a war on two fronts, they had to fend off Texan trespassers, as well as the Mexican government, which put a very large bounty on Apache scalps. Victorio was killed in 1880 at the Battle of Tres Castillos by the Mexican army, so Nana took on the position of Chief and kept the guerilla resistance alive and well from the Sierra Madre mountains. The resistance would end with the surrender of Apaches in 1886, and Nana would die 10 years later of natural causes as a prisoner in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The legendary chief is remembered for fighting alongside young men well into his 80s, even though he was half blind and had arthritis.
