π βHe read the storyβ¦
but he canβt retell it.β
Reading a story and understanding a story are not always the same thing.
Many students can read the words on a page accurately, yet struggle to explain what happened after they finish reading.
Strong readers learn to:
π identify important details
π§ remember key events
π understand sequence
π¬ explain information in their own words
One effective way to support comprehension is through story retelling.
When students can tell what happened:
β First
β Next
β Then
β Last
they demonstrate a deeper understanding of the text.
Retelling helps students move beyond word reading and toward true comprehension.
Reading is more than saying the words correctly.
Understanding and communicating meaning is the goal.

π βHe can answer the questionsβ¦
but he canβt find the answers.β
As students progress through school, reading comprehension becomes about more than simply answering questions correctly.
Strong readers learn how to support their answers with evidence from the text.
Many students will answer based on:
π memory
π prior knowledge
π what they think sounds right
Skilled readers learn to:
π read the question carefully
π return to the text
π locate relevant information
π support their answer with evidence
This is an important literacy skill because it helps students move from guessing to proving.
Whether reading a short passage, a chapter book, or informational text, students benefit from learning how to identify where the answer is found and explain how they know.
Reading is not just about finding an answer.
Itβs about understanding the text and supporting your thinking.

π βHeβs reading accuratelyβ¦
but heβs not understanding what he reads.β
One of the most important distinctions in literacy development is the difference between reading words and understanding them.
Many children can accurately read a sentence aloud, yet struggle to explain what it means.
For example, a child may read:
βThe dog hid under the bed.β
But may have difficulty answering:
πΆ Who hid?
ποΈ Where did the dog hide?
π¬ What happened?
Reading accuracy is important.
Comprehension is essential.
Strong readers learn to:
π± think about meaning
π± visualize what they read
π± answer questions
π± retell information
π± connect ideas together
This is why effective reading instruction includes both decoding and comprehension.
Reading is more than saying the words correctly.
Understanding is the goal.

π΄π§Έ βHe was asleep five minutes agoβ¦β
One of the things I love about working with toddlers is that you never quite know what version of them is going to walk through the door. π
Sometimes they arrive:
π΄ sleepy
π΄ rubbing their eyes
π΄ wanting to be carried
π΄ looking like they need another nap
Parents will often say:
π¬ βHe just woke up.β
π¬ βHeβs tired today.β
π¬ βHe may not do much.β
Then something magical happensβ¦
π They spot the toys.
Suddenly:
β‘ Eyes open.
β‘ Energy appears.
β‘ Curiosity takes over.
β‘ The nap is forgotten.
Before you know it, theyβre building, exploring, talking, pretending, and leading the entire session. π
This is one of the reasons play is such a powerful tool in early childhood development.
Through play, children naturally build:
π§ language skills
π€ social skills
π― attention and engagement
πͺ fine and gross motor skills
π cognitive development
Sometimes what looks like βjust playingβ is actually some of the most important learning happening all day.
And yesβ¦
Sometimes they come in looking like theyβre ready for bed and leave acting like they just drank three cups of coffee. βπ

π βHe knows the word todayβ¦
but will he know it tomorrow?β
One of the most common frustrations parents experience is watching their child successfully read a word one day and struggle with the same word a few days later.
This doesnβt necessarily mean the child isnβt learning.
It often means the skill has not yet become automatic.
Reading growth happens through:
π± repetition
π± review
π± consistency
π± structured practice
Exposure introduces a word.
Repetition helps a child remember it.
Practice helps a child recognize it automatically.
Automatic word recognition is important because it allows children to focus less on figuring out individual words and more on understanding what they read.
This is why strong reading instruction includes opportunities to revisit and practice previously learned skills rather than constantly introducing new material.
Children build reading confidence when familiar words become effortless.

π βHeβs readingβ¦
but heβs guessing.β
One of the most common reading challenges we see in early literacy is when children rely on pictures or context clues instead of the letters in the word.
For example, a child may see:
πΆ dog
and say:
βpuppyβ
The response makes sense.
But it isnβt what the word says.
This is why decoding instruction is so important.
Strong readers learn to:
π± look at all the letters
π± say the sounds
π± blend the sounds together
π± read the actual word on the page
Guessing may look like reading.
Decoding builds readers.
When children learn to trust the letters instead of the picture, they become more accurate, more confident, and more independent readers.
At Advanced Tutorials, we focus heavily on foundational literacy skills that help children build strong reading habits from the very beginning.

π±π Less Screen Time. More Connection.
One of the most powerful things we can give children isnβt found in an app.
Itβs our attention.
Children develop language, thinking skills, social skills, and confidence through interaction.
π¬ Conversations
π Reading together
𧩠Games and puzzles
π¨ Creating and building
πΆ Exploring the world around them
Screens have their place.
But children learn best when they are actively engaged with people, not just passively consuming content.
Sometimes the most meaningful learning moments happen during:
β’ dinner conversations
β’ bedtime stories
β’ walks outside
β’ board games
β’ helping in the kitchen
β’ simple everyday interactions
These moments build vocabulary, critical thinking, problem-solving, and relationships.
As adults, we often encourage children to spend less time on screens.
Perhaps we should challenge ourselves to do the same.
When children see us putting our phones down, they learn that people are more important than notifications.
π Read a book.
π² Play a game.
π¬ Have a conversation.
β€οΈ Be present.
The memories and connections will last far longer than anything on a screen.

π βShe can read the sentenceβ¦
but what does it mean?β
One of the most important shifts in reading happens when children move beyond simply saying the words and begin understanding what they read.
Many children can accurately read a sentence such as:
βThe cat is on the mat.β
But strong reading requires more than word calling.
Children must learn to:
π± think about meaning
π± visualize what they read
π± make connections
π± answer questions about the text
π± talk about their understanding
Reading the words is important.
Understanding them is the goal.
This is why comprehension instruction should begin as soon as children start reading simple words and sentences. Strong readers develop both decoding skills and comprehension skills together over time.
At Advanced Tutorials, we focus on building readers step-by-step through structured instruction, consistent practice, and meaningful literacy experiences.

πβ¨ More Books. Less Screen Time. β¨π
This summer, our emerging readers will be taking home leveled reading books to continue practicing between tutoring sessions.
Each book set is carefully selected to match a studentβs instructional level, providing opportunities for meaningful reading practice throughout the week. π
Why does this matter?
Strong readers are built through consistent exposure to text.
π More reading
π§ More vocabulary
π More fluency
π‘ More comprehension
β More confidence
While technology certainly has its place, there is still tremendous value in children holding a book, turning pages, and engaging with text every day.
At Advanced Tutorials, we believe reading growth happens through structured instruction, consistent practice, and meeting students where they are academically.
These take-home readers help extend learning beyond the tutoring table and support the habits that lead to long-term success.
π± This is how weβve built readers over time.
