The Fight Against an Age-Old Effort to Block Americans From Voting 08/15/2023

Voter intimidation and suppression takes different forms in different places, but anything that makes a voter feel uncomfortable exercising their right to vote is just that, and ultimately the goal of many. It’s sad when I’m 2023 folks still have to fight this hard to exercise their right to vote

The Fight Against an Age-Old Effort to Block Americans From Voting As a new wave of restrictions makes voting harder for people who struggle to read — now 1 in 5 Americans — Olivia Coley-Pearson has taken up the fight, even if it makes her a target.

They’re called the “voter privacy violation act” for a reason.

Many voters in Yuma county are already scared to vote after voter intimidation attempts last cycle- as evidenced by the fact that Yuma county had the lowest turnout in the state. These bills would only further disenfranchise voters who are already vulnerable to attack.

I am proud to have been deeply involved in the elections process in Yuma for the past 4 cycles. One of my biggest passions is election integrity and voter education. Voters who have information about how voting works, feel comfortable voting and are the ones who vote regularly. We have a lot of opportunity expand that in Yuma by to continuing to educate our high school students, our bilingual and migrant communities. As well as, informing our winter visitors and newcomers who have relocated to Yuma permanently. Follow me as I work to educate our county on the election process, and voting rights because an engaged voting population is what makes our community and democracy great.

Today is the last day to drop your mail in ballot ing the mail. After today, you’ll need to drop it at a ballot drop box location, including on Election Day by 7pm, at any vote center on Election Day (no need to wait in line) or vote in person on August 2nd. Primaries matter and many local offices will be decided next Tuesday. Ballot drop box locations below. *please note due to voter intimidation issues the drop boxes at library locations are inside and only available during open library hours*

Instituto is an organization I am proud to support that is working to make sure Yuma county residents have the information they need to vote! Because our vote matters and local elections are won and lost by a handful of votes. Make sure to attend this voter information event on Saturday

Doing my part to ensure our community has easy access to voter information and education because there is too much at stake

It is not news that our community is hurting, that is why I was proud to announce my candidacy for the Clerk of the Superior Court earlier this year. As I saw it, the people being served by the Clerk’s Office are often the ones that need the most support. Families that are going through divorce, people fighting to regain their rights, and widowers struggling to navigate probate court, among many others.

However, to bring forth lasting change we don’t just need good candidates we need our elections systems to work. Right now, our elections system is under attack by special interest groups and those who seek to divide and disenfranchise our community.

I have always been a fierce advocate for election integrity, transparency, and accessibility. I believe that our vote is the most fundamental right we have to protect ourselves and our community from authoritarianism. That is why I have been working so diligently as the Yuma County Democratic Party Chair to have more poll observers, increase voter education, and hold our election officials accountable.

Recently, in doing my due diligence for my race, I found an obscure code of conduct that would prevent me from running while continuing this critical work as the Yuma County Democratic Party Chair. And frankly, with a new temporary County Recorder, and the amount of voter suppression and intimidation being carried out in Yuma County, I knew that I couldn't abandon that fight. For that reason, I have come to the hard decision to set aside my campaign for Clerk of the Superior Court and instead continue to serve the people of Yuma County, on what I think is the more pressing issue right now -- voter rights and empowerment.

I want to thank everyone that has supported me throughout this campaign and look forward to working with each of you to protect our rights to vote.

As a daughter of a veteran the 4th of July has always been more than a celebration of independence, it’s a day for civic duty. Service has always been a part of my life. This year it was my pleasure to spend the day out in the county - educating voters about new voting changes, current ballot initiatives, and local candidates. To include own campaign for Clerk of the Superior Court. I wear many hats but my life and work experience have prepared me well for public service. I look forward to using this experience to improve the Superior Court Clerk’s Office.
