Please be aware, rabid animals have been confirmed in Yukon, el Reno and Edmond. Make sure your pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations!
UPDATE: The Oklahoma State Department of Health has notified the City of El Reno that a second rabies test conducted on the raccoon collected in the 800 block of SW 26th Street has come back negative.
We apologize for any confusion. The earlier positive result was based on a preliminary report, and the updated confirmatory test shows the animal was not rabid.
Residents are still encouraged to keep pets vaccinated, avoid approaching wildlife exhibiting unusual behavior, and report suspicious animals to El Reno Animal Control at 405-262-6941. Please do not attempt to capture or handle wild animals.
Rabid Raccoon Confirmed on SW 26th Street in El Reno; City Urges Pet Safety and Vigilance
The El Reno Animal Control has confirmed that a raccoon captured this week in the 800 block of SW 26th Street has tested positive for rabies. This confirmed case follows recent reports of rabid skunks in nearby Yukon and Edmond, further heightening regional awareness of rabies risks. Officials emphasize that rabies is a serious, potentially fatal virus that can spread to both pets and humans through bites or scratches from infected wildlife.
Precautions for residents and pet owners:
• Ensure all dogs and cats are current on rabies vaccinations.
• Supervise pets outdoors and prevent them from roaming freely in areas where wildlife may be present.
• Do not approach, touch, feed, or attempt to capture wild animals.
• Keep trash secured and remove outdoor food sources that may attract wildlife.
• If your pet has contact with a wild or suspicious animal, contact a veterinarian immediately.
• Report any animal displaying abnormal behavior — such as aggression, staggering, confusion, or being active during unusual hours — to authorities.
Residents who see a suspicious or potentially rabid animal in the El Reno area should call Animal Control at 405-262-6941. Officials stress that the public should not attempt to capture or handle any wild animal.
