If a security guard left a door propped open and a robbery happened… we'd all know who’s responsible.
So why does cybersecurity get treated differently?
Jonathan Kimmitt recently wrote a piece exploring a simple analogy that exposes a big problem in our industry:
👉 In physical security, failing to lock a door is negligence.
👉 In cybersecurity, failing to patch known vulnerabilities should be viewed the same way.
Too often, breaches caused by basic, preventable issues are blamed on “sophisticated attackers.” But as regulators and courts tighten expectations, the conversation is shifting toward accountability.
• NIST CSF, CIS, and ISO 27001 now define what “reasonable security” looks like.
• Cases like FTC v. Wyndham and the SEC’s SolarWinds action show regulators aren’t ignoring preventable weaknesses anymore.
• Businesses are realizing that cybersecurity is not just an IT task—it’s risk management.
The core question organizations need to ask: Was the attacker unstoppable… or was the digital door simply left open?
