As I sit in pause at The Festival of the Child I thought I would take a moment to post. This past Wednesday, May 1st, was the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month. To kick it off we participated in the My Mind Matters event at the State Capitol.
This was an amazing event! My friend Kyle Dillingham played his broken violin. Beauty can come from things that are broken. My friend State Rep Jay Steagall came down as well.
We made many connections one being with the State Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. My wife and and were asked to speak at their meeting on Friday which we were happy to do. I'm hoping for great things to come from it!
Mental health matters!
It's been a while since I posted. I've never been a consistent posting person but will hopefully improve going forward. A lot of great things have been happening recently. So much that I'm not able to let you know tonight. Festival of the Child event in Yukon is tomorrow. I'll be there and it will allow the time for me to post what's going on.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month!
The Mission of Kommunity Kindness Inc. is to raise awareness in regards to the needs of the mentally ill, assist with improving their lives and collaborate with like-minded organizations.
We're asking for your help in that we have a donor willing to match up to $1,000.00 of donations. This money will help us to be able to reach more people in need through marketing our support group and letting them know they are not alone. This time of year through the holidays is an especially difficult time for many.
Our short term goals are:
-increase marketing
-spring event in March
-event at the State Capital in May (May is Mental Health Awareness Month)
-end of May Banquet
-secure transportation for Canadian County nonprofits such as ICAN and Cardinal Point
Mental Health Matters! We only have a couple of days to benefit from the generosity of our donor.
Having a child with mental illness my wife and I have heard many, let's say, unintelligent remarks. One such, let's say, unintelligent remark is "it's not mental illness it's a demon." Now when you ask what work they do it doesn't ever have anything to do with demons or mental illness. They get offended when you question their intelligence which is baffling after they just said my child is possessed.
This kind of stupidity has to stop!
Here's a fact from the past about the origin of saying bless you after a sneeze.
People used to believe a sneeze caused someone to expel their soul out of their body, and so “God bless you” or “Bless you” was used as a protection against the devil snatching your soul.
Is there anyone who still believes that?
Our next support group is tomorrow, the 23rd, at 6:30pm at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Yukon.
We want everyone who cares for someone suffering with mental illness to know you're not alone! Together we will end the stigma!

Then you know that it isn't just difficult but there's a huge stigma attached. There's not a lot of help but there is a lot of ridicule.
You're not alone!
