The meaning of mosses
In nature:

They participate in the creation of special biocenoses, especially where the soil is almost completely covered (tundra).
The moss cover is capable of accumulating and retaining radioactive substances.
They play an important role in regulating the water balance of landscapes, as they are able to absorb and retain large amounts of water.
In human activity:

The branch of botany, the subject of which is bryophytes, is called bryology.
Much evidence indicates that mosses, like other spore plants, evolved from psilophytes (rhinophytes), a group of ancient extinct land plants. At the same time, the moss sporophyte is considered as the final result of the reduction of the branched sporophyte of ancestral forms.

Previously, this department, in addition to the class of leaf-stemmed mosses, or mosses proper (in the rank of class - Bryopsida), also included liver mosses (in the rank of class - Marchantiopsida, or Hepaticopsida) and Anthocerotic mosses (in the rank of class - Anthocerotopsida), but now these taxa elevated to the level of their own departments Marchantiophyta and Anthocerotophyta. To denote the totality of these three departments, the informal collective term bryophytes (Bryophytes) is used.

As a rule, these are small plants, the length of which only occasionally exceeds 50 mm; the exceptions are aquatic mosses, some of which are more than half a meter long, and epiphytes, which can be even longer. Bryophytes, like other Bryophytes, differ from other higher plants in that in their life cycle the haploid gametophyte prevails over the diploid sporophyte.

The concepts of moss and bryophytes are very extensive and unite many species. Basically, these are low-growing perennial plants with a height of 1 mm to several centimeters, but there are species reaching 60 cm or more. A distinctive feature of mosses is the complete absence of the root system.
Bryophytes, or Mosses, or Real mosses, or Bryophytes (lat. Bryophyta), is a department of higher plants, numbering about 100 thousand species, united in about 700 genera and 110-120 families (the total number of all bryophytes, including liver mosses and Anthocerot mosses, is about 20,000 species ).
