Mechanics Hall: Where culture and community meet. The Heart of the Community in Worcester since 1857.

This Juneteenth, we reflect on the enduring legacy of freedom, perseverance, and the pursuit of justice—and on the stories we continue to preserve and share.

Through the 2024 Portraits Project, Mechanics Hall commissioned and installed portraits of Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and William & Martha Brown in our Great Hall Gallery. Their lives and contributions help tell a more complete story of Worcester, Mechanics Hall, and the movements for abolition, civil rights, and social change.

Today, we honor their legacies and reaffirm a simple but powerful truth: Black history is American history.

We were honored to host a press conference and tea at Mechanics Hall for members of Nihon Hidankyo during their visit to Worcester.

The delegation included Hibakusha — survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki — whose lifelong advocacy for peace and nuclear disarmament helped earn Nihon Hidankyo the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.

Guests were also treated to a moving musical selection performed by Mechanics Hall’s own Christon Carney. We are grateful to have welcomed these remarkable voices of remembrance, resilience, and hope.
