One of the most effective track workouts for 5k–10k runners to improve race pace and VO2 Max is Speed Quarters (400 meters). Run 8-12 400 meter repeats under control (not running too fast) with a 200 meter recovery at an easy run pace. The goal is to run consistent splits, which requires staying focused as fatigue increases during the last few repeats. For those with little track experience, begin with 6-8 400 meter repeats and a 400 meter recovery.

London Marathon winner Sabastian Sawe (KEN) broke the two-hour barrier, running a World Record of 1:59:30. Second place finisher Yomif Kejelcha (ETH) also broke 2 hours running 1:59:41 in his marathon debut.

Runners following a training plan from a book or website who are running an early spring marathon, like Boston or Rock n Roll Nashville may need to adjust the Taper or Peaking Phase of the program. Most Taper or Peaking Phase mileages are based on specific percentages of the last 3-4 weeks of mileage from the Marathon Specific Phase of the program. Runners who missed weekly mileage goals due to the challenging winter weather should adjust Taper or Peaking mileage based on the mileage they actually ran.
