This librarian is spending part of the day at WPL's Frances Perkins Branch (a.k.a. FPBL), and in honor of that visit, we're sharing some information about the history of the branch. First of all: it's one of the three libraries in Worcester funded by Andrew Carnegie, the steel tycoon, but the only one still existing as a library. Second: it was known as the Greendale Branch for nearly 80 years, after the community in which it was located. Third: The Greendale Branch was added to the National List of Historic Places in 1980. Fourth: WPL renamed the branch the Frances Perkins Branch in 1994 after noted U.S. Labor Secretary, Frances Perkins, who lived in Worcester as a child and went to Classical High School. Finally, it's a pretty cool branch, with attractions such as a Library of Things collection, murals inside the children's section of the library, a community garden on the side of the building (including vegetables and sunflowers!), and last but not least, a cow sculpture that was previously exhibited at the Old Sturbridge Village!
