The Senate today passed legislation sponsored by Senator Brian Thompson that would improve education quality and safety within Rhode Island’s classrooms.

The legislation would create procedures to ensure student and teacher classroom safety and it establishes the authority to remove disruptive and dangerous students from classrooms. The bill would also create protections for students and educators from said removals and would define the school district’s responsibilities relating to the safety and well-being of the removed student.

“Students and teachers deserve to feel safe and secure within the classroom. While there may be many legitimate reasons for a student’s disruptive behavior in class, it is unfair for other students and staff to have their day hampered due to the behavior of one student. This bill will give teachers and administrators the procedures and authority to keep classrooms running smoothly and focused, while also providing the proper support and compassion for students who need extra attention and help,” said Senator Thompson (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland).

The Senate today approved legislation introduced by Senator Brian Thompson that would help patients get out of the hospital faster by returning decision making about post-hospitalization treatment to doctors and patients.

The bill is part of the Senate’s 2026 healthcare legislative package.

“Leaving a hospital doesn’t mean a patient has recovered, it means they are ready for their next step in the recovery process. Too often, prior authorization requirements keep patients in the hospital longer than necessary, creating stress for families and driving up costs across the healthcare system. This bill removes that barrier because care decisions should be made by doctors and patients, not their insurers,” said Senator Thompson (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland).

American Legion Post 85 in Woonsocket hosted a Purple-Up Event today, raising funds to benefit children of military service members.

This afternoon was truly a remarkable occasion as we gathered to honor Captain John Picard with a Rhode Island Senate citation, recognizing his incredible contributions to the city of Woonsocket over his impressive 36 year career with the Woonsocket Police Department. It was a moment filled with gratitude and appreciation for a leader who has dedicated his life to serving our community.

During my time working alongside Captain Picard over the past four years, I've had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the many issues he has adeptly handled. His commitment to addressing our constituents' needs has made a profound impact, and I'm grateful for his unwavering dedication and support. Captain Picard has not only been a guiding force within the department but also a steadfast pillar for our community, ensuring that Woonsocket remains a safe and welcoming place for all.

As we celebrated his legacy today, I want to extend my thanks to him once again for all he has accomplished. His leadership has inspired not only his fellow officers but also all of us who have had the honor of working with him. While we bid farewell to Captain Picard as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement, we do so with the knowledge that he leaves behind a department and a community that is stronger and safer because of his efforts.

Additionally, I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the men and women of the Woonsocket Police Department. Your tireless work and commitment to keeping our city safe do not go unnoticed. It’s important to remember that a great leader is only as good as the team he serves with, and Captain Picard has been incredibly fortunate to lead such a dedicated group of officers. Thank you all for your service, your bravery, and your unwavering commitment to our community. Together, you embody the spirit of Woonsocket, and we are all grateful for the work you do day in and day out.
