Many a times seniors receiving RMDs (Required minimum distributions) and social security benefits do not realize that some or part of their social security benefits may become taxable at either 50% or at 85%. Taxation is dependent on combined income which consists of earned income (for example, wages earned plus interest earned plus dividends plus half of social security benefits earned divided by total gross income. If the result is greater than $25000 but less than $32000, you social security will be taxed at 50%. If the amount is greater than $32000 then your social security income will be taxed at 85%.
Next, please ensure that the 1099-R that you have received is coded appropriately. If it is coded 1, then that means that the distribution is a premature distribution that means that the distribution is early distribution with no known exception. This is critical if you are above 59 1/2 years of age in the year you took that distribution because you will be assessed 10% penalty or additions to tax in addition to being taxed at the normal rate.
Please consult with your financial advisor to see if you can roll your RMDs to other pension plan as the age threshold for the contribution is 72 years.

Child Tax Credit Update Portal | Internal Revenue Service
As you know that the Congress directed the IRS to use 2019 or 2020 tax return information to deliver monthly payments of the child tax credit as outlined in the American Rescue Plan that was enacted in March 2021 to help families that are struggling to make ends meet. Important factors to remember is:
1) The enhanced credit (for the entire year) is $3,000 per child for children between the ages of 6 - 17 years and $3,600 per child for children between the ages of 1 - 5 years.
2) Income thresholds are $75,000 for single filers and capped at $150,000 with a phaseout for incomes above the thresholds.
3) IRS will use the older income information to deliver the monthly payments (based on 2019 or 2020 tax return).
4) If your income has changed for 2021 (increase), the credit will be calculated based on 2021 income and you might have to pay back the portion of the received credit to the IRS.
5) If your child turned 18 last year, you may have to remit the credit received to the IRS.
Please use the link below to see if you are eligible, view your advance payments or to opt out of receiving advance payments.

‘Tis the season.. here is a tip:
If you have not received your W-2 or 1099- Misc by the end of February, filing 4852 instead of 1040 would ensure you are not paying a late filing penalty and making your estimated tax payments throughout the year would ensure you not being assessed with failure to pay penalty. If you receive your W-2 after you filed firm 4852, and if there is a discrepancy in your return, make sure to amend your return.
Often Taxpayers view their State & Local Tax refund as the overpayment of their State Taxes and do not include that on their current year filing. One major decision factor that should be noted is that if the Taxpayer itemized their deductions they must include the prior year State tax refund in their current year filing (in another words it becomes taxable income).. Read on...
State income tax refunds can sometimes be taxable income, according to the IRS—"sometimes" being the operative word. You must report them on line 10 of Schedule 1 of the new 2018 Form 1040, but only if you claimed a deduction for state and local taxes the year before.
