Mississippi would certainly benefit from restoring the ballot initiative process, but you can't have it both ways, Mr. Speaker. When elected representatives fail to act in their constituents' best interests, those constituents should have the power to determine any choice.

Missouri is next in the line of state legislatures this year to attempt to suffocate the initiative process. It's crucial for citizens to be able to initiate ballot measures when their legislature fails to represent them. It's both suspect and ludicrous that a state legislature would decide to put on the ballot a law that would minimize citizens' ability to self-govern.

So far in 2025, the Fairness Project has tracked 148 state legislative bills that were or are aimed at consolidating power for lawmakers and take it away from voters. The yearly average from 2000 to 2023 was 16.
Stripping voters' initiative rights is unconscionable and must be stopped; instead they have radically accelerated.
