One of the hardest things about sports is that growth rarely feels good while it’s happening.
A mistake. A tough loss. Less playing time. Those moments can feel like the whole story.
Most of the time, they’re only one chapter.
As parents, we can’t remove every disappointment. But we can help our kids learn from it and keep moving forward.
🎙️ We talk more about this in Episode 4 of the *Parenting Athletes Podcast*, now streaming on Spotify and YouTube. Links are in our bio.
Save this for the next tough game, or share it with a fellow sports parent.
Before your child plays their first game, ask yourself one question:
What do I want this journey to be about?
The answer to that question will shape the conversations you have, the expectations you set, and ultimately, your child’s experience in sports.
In Episode 2 of the Parenting Athletes Podcast, Kevin Dalafu and I talk about why defining your family’s values first matters more than wins, losses, or trophies, and how keeping the focus on development helps kids enjoy the journey while continuing to grow.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that parenting athletes isn’t about having all the answers.
Every child is different. Every family is different. What works in one situation may not work in another.
What matters is being thoughtful, staying curious, and giving ourselves enough grace to learn along the way. We’ll get some things right. We’ll get some things wrong. That’s part of the journey.
I enjoyed digging into these ideas with Phil Martelli and talking about sports, parenting, leadership, and the lessons we’re all still learning.
