CLEARING OF NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY TO BEGIN MONDAY

On Monday (March 17), Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews will begin clearing snow beyond the North Cascades Highway closure area at milepost 171 (Silver Star). This will begin a project that typically about six weeks to complete, putting the highway on track for a late-April opening, barring any delays.

The agency asks anyone who has a snowmobile parked beyond the closure point to remove it before Monday. Recreationists are also asked to stay out of the closed portion of North Cascades Highway during work hours, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Before visiting this area, check avalanche conditions with the Northwest Avalanche Center.

North Cascades Highway closed for the winter on Nov. 15, 2024.

Last spring, WSDOT opened the highway between mileposts 134 and 171 on April 19. The pass did not open until May the previous four years.
